Read it in Fifth grade with the class, It was amazing!

I recently acquired a spinning paperback book shelf and have been filling it with vintage/pulpy books, as well as turtlebacks when I can find them. This was one of those. Turtlebacks, for those that don't know, are the small paperbacks that schools (usually) have made as hardcovers because a book is checked out and read by so many students that a traditional paperback would fall apart.

This was definitely a heartwarming story about a young man who has not only had a horrific childhood because of his murdering father, his life is further complicated by the fact that he is HUGE. He is mostly silent, doesn't engage with others and is seemingly simple minded. Of course he isn't really. Max meets another young boy with physical impairments that complement Max perfectly. They form a sweet bond that carries the bulk of the novel.

I can see the appeal of this to almost any 11-13 year old. What kid that age doesn't feel like an outsider sometimes? Because of the intended audience things are left fairly vague, but there are some actual horrors outlined.

There is a very sweet homemade dictionary in the back of the book that is well worth reading.

When one of my students looks me in the eye and tells me that I HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. You read that book. So glad I did.

In reading class we read a novel called Freak the Mighy by a author name Rodman Phillbrick about a sensible travel of friendship.Which it means one person has your back when your alone.And this about two boys who creates knight of worthy, first a boy named Kevin, nickname Freak he's small,smart,and wants a bionic transplant. And second a boy name Max who doesn't remeber anything , ashame what he looks like, and lives with his grandparent.These two will show passion and will give you hardship and joy. Which means would you read this book to feel how friendship realy represent? And also how friendship means when there gone and different.

If beging friends occurs help I would say "I'll be there". I said that because in the book has a helping hand toward two boys which creates happiness. When Freak said "When you read its like a picture". And that just hit me while reading it in reading class. And if you hate reading imagine it your realy watching in movie form. Toward reading the book is mostly about quest and journey which has action into it,and that represent me and my sister when we were young and I miss that. And this book will give you suprise you in many ways because Max and Kevin would do crazy and exciting things that you will never thought while starting to read it. When I read this I could never thought that it will be different, and what I thouht it will be boring because of the front cover. When I said that of course people would say don't judge a book from its cover. And this book is interesting that made me sad and scared, but it encourage me to read more even the movie it was good.

Finaly if your a adventure person or just like action well this your day get one of this book and read until you get what Im saying. And I gave this book a rating of four because I only like it. That means interesting and worth it to read it. And every details I can imagine it, and that made me think what the book is going to be next. And I suggest you read this it might make you sad and scared, and also maybe become a knight. I apperciate and someday watch the movie to its different, but has action and i like it also funny.

It was such an amazing book. It made me cry a bit but I honestly recommend it.

My daughter is reading this book in her 7th Grade English class and so I thought I'd check it out myself. To be honest I wasn't that impressed. It was a good story, quite heart-warming really, but Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was much better, and really this is a similar story. Basically a really large, quite dumb person is befriended by a smaller and smarter person. In this story it's school kids, in Of Mice and Men, it's adults, but it's the same premise. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that this is what was chosen though, because I think Of Mice and Men holds more literary value, and that's what I read in 7th Grade. For an English class, I don't think it's a fantastic choice, but as a general read, this is a good book and a fast read, so I would still recommend it. It's a great story of friendship, overcoming obstacles, and never letting go of dreams.

In reading class we read a novel called Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick. The story is about two kids that are name Kevin and Max. These are the two main characters of the book and become best friends when Kevin the cripple kid also known as Freak moves by Max know as The Mighty after becoming best friends and start to hang out they end up calling themselves Freak the Mighty.
What I had expected from the book before reading it was that a kid was just lonley and he had no one to talk to until he met a kid wierd looking and small just by looking at the front cover of the book. What had actually happen in the book was that Freak and Mighty became friends and did everything together like slay dragons but not literally but they will go on quest and will have fun. I actually really enjoyed the book because you could try and guess what would happen next because they're ideas in the book but the fun part is that you need to wait and see if you were right or wrong on your guess that you made. One of the things that I learned from the book is that it dont matter how young you are you could still live your life by just having fun.
My feelings and emotions for when I was reading the book kept me on my toes cause I always wanted to know what Freak and Max where going to do next or what was going to happen next. One of my emotions for the book was that I was sad for what had happen because Kevin and Max go through a lot of stuff. When I finished reaing one of my favorite character was Freak because he is hilarious by the things he says in the book and also because he is the smart one so he knew how to do more things. A person that surprised me was Iggy and Loreta Lee because the thing they did towards the ending of the book.

If you’re looking for a book to read, read one of the most amazing books I have ever read, Freak the Mighty. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a powerful friendship like Freak and Max’s. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars for Freak and Max’s friendship, their different personalities, and the very sad ending.
tFreak and Max’s friendship was like no one else’s. The two of them became very close friends in the beginning of eighth grade, like Max mentioned, “I never had a brain until Freak came along,” The two of them as Freak the Mighty were unstoppable, and no one could have a friendship like theirs and it made the book so much more fascinating while reading. One of my favorite quotes was when Freak and Max were getting made fun of and he told the teacher about Freak the Mighty. “Freak is saying, ‘Sometimes we’re nine feet tall, and strong enough to walk through walls. Sometimes we fight gangs. Sometimes we find treasure; sometimes we slay dragons and drink from the Holy Grail!’[…] He’s raising his fist and punching it in the air going, ‘Freak the Mighty, Freak the Mighty!’ Even though their friendship was a big majority of the book, their personalities made it even more interesting to read.
tMax and Freak were completely two different people in this book which made you think how they became friends. “crippled up, yellow-haired midget,” stated Max about Freak, and Max, “growing about an inch a day,” made you keep reading throughout the book and make you think how did they become Freak the Mighty and be best friends. Both of their personalities really made the book so fascinating, but the devastating ending was the one that really appealed to me.
tThe ending really made Freak the Mighty such a powerful story about two different kids and their friendship. Though the ending was very sad it made the book so much more appealing to me. The saddest quote in the book had to been the last time Max got to talk with Freak, “The book reminds me of the dictionary he gave me for Christmas , except when I open it, all the pages are blank, ‘That’s for you’ he says, ‘I want you to fill it up with our adventures.’[…] “That was a year ago. I hid in the down under for days and days and kept the door closed, which is why I missed the funeral and the Fair Gwen going away.” Even though the ending was devastating I will always remember that quote.
tFreak the Mighty was the best book I have ever read and I would give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a powerful and memorable friendship like Freak and Max’s. Overall Freak the Mighty was an amazing and memorable book and if you are trying to look for a book to read, read the powerful and memorable story Freak the Mighty.

Read this with my class and I absolutely loved it!

Freak the mighty is a great story. It is a story about two kids. One is Freak and the other is Max. Freak has Morquio Syndrome, but that does not stop him from having high hopes and expectations. Freak lives with his mother Gwen. Max lives with his grandparents, Grim and gram. Freak moves in next door to Max. Then little by little they become friends, best friends. Together they are freak the mighty. They have lots of adventures together. One of their favorite is going to the doctor, for Freak thinks he’s going to get a bionic body. Later on in the story, Max is kid knapped by his father who killed his mother. He tries to make Max his obedient partner, but it does not happen. Fortunately, Freak comes along and saves him. I find the ending of this story very sad. Freak always talked about how he would get a bionic body. Unfortunately in his birthday he has a seizure. It runs out Freak knew what would happen in the end. His heart was full of joy and awesome that it got too big for his body. Well it got too big because of his health problems, but that’s another way to think about it.
I absolutely loved this book! I think it’s a great book that tells a great story and I’d recommend it to anyone.

As a special education teacher I struggled listening to parts of this book. The language used in this book is inappropriate. Also, they make having a learning disability sound like a bad thing. The book made it seem like your really stupid if you have one. And that is not true. The book did have some exciting and interesting points in it. A lot of it was unrealistic, especially with the father, but it kept the story interesting.
