It is difficult to think of many literary characters who have had anything like the huge impact that Sherlock Holmes has had - not just in literary terms, but culturally as well. The legend that is Sherlock Holmes goes way beyond the world of the written word - and for good reason too; as a character, Holmes is a wonderfully original, eccentric, sociopathic, misanthropic, fascinating, astonishingly brilliant and almost unparalleled creation. The wonderful character that is Sherlock Holmes - both hero and anti-hero, coupled with the conversely grounded Dr Watson and the fascinating stories / cases / mysteries that Conan Doyle weaves for the reader compound to produce the excellent Sherlock Holmes novels - of which 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (along with 'A Study in Scarlett' and 'The Sign of Four' are definitely some of the best, although it is hard to choose.

It is also difficult to think of any characters from literature other than Sherlock Holmes, who have created such an aura of mystery surrounding them, a mythology, an industry almost - very much blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction - creating (in some quarters) a belief that Holmes was indeed a real person, who lived at 221b Baker Street, London - it's there, you can visit 'the home of Sherlock Holmes' - thus adding to and fueling the whole mythology.

Whilst not for everyone - these are brilliant and fascinating stories, lots of fun and come highly recommended.

'The game is afoot'

(Originally Shakespeare - appropriated unforgettably by Arthur Conan Doyle for Sherlock Holmes).

Incredible Book. Sir Henry Baskerville, a young man recently arrived from North America to take possession of the estate of his uncle, who's died suddenly, seeks the counsel and protection of Sherlock Holmes. The wealthy Sir Charles apparently died fleeing in terror from an unknown enemy; meanwhile, Sir Henry himself is receiving mysterious threats, perhaps related to a Baskerville family curse involving an innocent maiden, a reprobate ancestor, and a vengeful hound. Holmes, busy with other affairs, sends the faithful Dr. Watson to the country to keep watch over Sir Henry and send back reports, which are soon flowing with accounts of the gloomy moor and surroundings. Among the cast: Dr. Mortimer, the eccentric country practitioner; the enigmatic Barrymores, who have has been servants to the Baskervilles for generations; Stapleton and his ubiquitous butterfly net, not to mention his sister, who quickly becomes Sir Henry's romantic interest. Meanwhile a murderer has escaped from the nearby prison and is loose on the moor, spine-chilling howls are heard at night by sober men, and Watson and Sir Henry are more nervous than they care to admit. Surprise revelations and terrifying moments ensue before Holmes brings things to a generally safe conclusion.

"Now is the dramatic moment of fate, Watson, when you hear a step upon the stairs which is walking into your life, and you know not whether for good or ill."

What makes The Hound of Baskervilles not only the best Holmes novel I’ve read so far, but also the definitive gothic murder mystery, and, some argue, the greatest crime novel ever written? Following is a list of key suspects: Manor house murthers; mysterious missives; motivations as murderously murky as the mires & moors masked in mist; MOOD MOOD MOOD; ancient curses; devil dogs! Black Shuck?! delusions! derangements! dementia! creeping fog and banshee winds and knobby shadow trees; duplicitous identities; oozy muck that swallows nefarious beings like some hungry mouth of Hell; the only utterance even approaching “Elementary, my dear Watson” in the whole oeuvre; family fortunes filched by cutthroat kin; an introductory breakfast scene that embodies the entirety of the Holmes methodology applied to one walking stick that sets up the whole scenario; CREEPY FORESHADOWING; portentous portraits! etymological twists! the GENIUS DETECTIVE vs. the ECCENTRIC NOBLEMAN; the SUPERNATURAL vs. the labyrinths of REASON; the tightening net of plot whirling ever toward its fantastically suspenseful FINALE; and of course and most importantly our heroes Holmes and Watson afoot down the ghostly English country lanes of their eternally flowing, inexhaustible mythos!-- Not to mention that at the outset Mortimer utters this sublime summation of my personal feelings about Holmes himself:

"It is not my intention to be fulsome, but I confess that I covet your skull."

This was part of my 10th grade fiction curriculum and I loved it. I still remember the whole class being absolutely riveted when this was being narrated. A classic read for any murder mystery fan.

This adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ was done well enough and decently.

It paid a good enough tribute to the genius of Doyle and made the story come alive again in the minds of the reader. The classic has been edited well and the simplification of certain complex sentences will aid the younger reader as he or she delves deeper into the life and times of Sherlock Holmes.

However, the illustrations could have been done in a more professional manner. All the illustrations are mere replications of various scenes from certain famous Sherlock Holmes movies, T.V. serials or animated cartoons. It is obvious that the artist used Jeremey Brett as his or her depiction of Sherlock Holmes which is not in keeping with the norms regarding such illustrations. Certain scenes have been simply picked up from the Jeremy Brett T.V. serial which cannot be overlooked.
It would seem that the illustrator managed to get a hold of almost all the movies made on and about this particular classic and has used many scenes therein in the book as an inspiration for his own drawings. One such scene is when Doctor Watson and Henry Baskerville were hunting down Seldon the notorious convict; that scene depicting them hiding behind a granite rock has been directly lifted from a 1983 animated movie Sherlock Holmes and the Baskerville Curse. In fact, this animated movie was the basis for many of the drawings in this abridged classic. The image of the terrifying hound with phosphorus, the Yew Alley crime scene, and the scene where Doctor Watson spied Henry Baskerville wooing his lady love all were simple replications of this animated video.

The illustrations were sketchy, too amateurish, and inconsistent with the main plot. There are several instances where Henry Baskerville appears to be sporting a moustache and suddenly others where he is not. Some depict him as a man with raven black hair and others as a golden-haired gentleman! Doctor Mortimer’s caricature keeps on changing as the classic progresses making us at times mix him up with Doctor Watson and even with Lestrade at the end of the abridged classic. Doctor Watson’s thick whiskers keep on changing as the book progresses while the good doctor keeps on losing and gaining ‘weight’ in the book’s images literally as well as metaphorically speaking.

The illustrations depicting Hugo Baskerville’s chase to hunt down the peasant girl was an excellent example of the poor historical background knowledge of the artist which is especially seen in the dress worn by the maiden and Hugo’s frock coat. I also wish to note here that the artist seemed very reluctant to sketch women and so we hardly see much of Mrs. Barrymore, Mrs. Stapleton or Laura Lyons in this adapted classic. If we do at all see them, they are mere replications of their counterparts in certain old black and white Hollywood movies and BBC serials that were aired during the 1970s and 1980s.

Certain slang terms used in the text can mar the reading of the text slightly, but otherwise, the editing of the story was done well, and I appreciated the textual adaptation. That was the winning stroke for me in this Wonder House abridged classic and so I shall reward it with 3 stars.

We must remember that these illustrations in abridged or adapted classics are not mere ‘decorative pieces’ or ‘add on’ to a story but are part and parcel of the overall reading experience of a child just starting out to read these masterpieces. Let us not give step-motherly treatment to our illustrations and try to work towards creating quality classics rather than mere quantity. Let us not ruin generations of readers by our irresponsible behavior and complacency regarding these classics. It is obvious that the illustrator and adaptor were not working together at all in the conceptualization of this product, thus the mismatched result. I would highly recommend the publishers to see to it that in later classics, both their adaptors/editors and artists should work together while creating a product. Compared to an earlier classic published by this same firm, this title was better and so it influenced my rating accordingly.

This story is an institution from my childhood. I first heard it as a child; my mother told it to me as a bedtime story (yes, my mom is like that). I was creeped out totally - and continued to be so while I read the story in umpteen plagiarised translations (where the hound was changed to all kinds of animal including a monkey) and finally in the original. I even saw two movie adaptations, one in Malayalam (Agnimrigam - bad) and one in Hindi (Bees Saal Baad - good).

If you are a mystery buff and don't know the story of this one, then most probably you are not living on this planet! "The Hound of Hell" terrorises the Baskerville family, a curse visited on them because of a womanising ancestor who sold his soul to the devil to abduct a woman. The hound is apparently bent on killing all the members of the family. It is left to Holmes to battle the forces of darkness and save Sir Henry Baskerville, the last of the line.

As mysteries go, this is not your classical whodunit, but it is an eerily suspenseful story which will keep you glued to the page. And I found the concept of the hound genuinely frightening - apparently Conan Doyle based this on a real Dartmoor legend.

--------------------------------

I had the chance to visit Dartmoor and enjoy its wild beauty in 2009: also visit the house where Conan Doyle stayed while writing this book, which is now a museum.
