My Grandpa Cannon loved this story, and he often told of a time when he went to see a "picture show" about the Hound of the Baskervilles. "It scared the willies out of me," he said, and then he and his friend had to part ways as my grandpa rode his bicycle home in the dark.

He was thinking about this devil-hound, and then he heard something panting behind him. He pedaled faster and faster, but the panting only got faster and faster too. Then, it was harder and harder to pedal, and his bike was going slower and slower. Just when he thought for sure he was doomed to die and the hound would get him, his bike stopped, the panting stopped, and he found that his back wheel had a flat tire. A flap of rubber had made the panting sound as the air was being released.

That has nothing to do with this story, except that it is the reason I read the book. Good book too! Almost as good a story as my grandpa's.

I enjoyed this! It’s less convoluted than the first book in the series but can’t compare to the BBC rendition...

“It came with the wind through the silence of the night, a long, deep mutter, then a rising howl, and then the sad moan in which it died away. Again and again it sounded, the whole air throbbing with it, strident, wild and menacing.”

I enjoyed this so much! I've seen so many adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories - The BBC adaptation, Elementary, the movies featuring Robert Downey Jr, various book retellings - but I've never actually read any of the original stories. So it was nice to get into this and see what they're actually like compared to the adaptations.

I thought this story was a lot of fun. While it starts a little slow, you soon get drawn into the mystery and the spooky setting of the English moors. This was SO gothic! There was the misty moors, a mysterious pit where things go missing, a potentially supernatural hound that glows, murder, and strange noises being heard throughout the night. I loved how gothic elements played into this story - the atmosphere and aesthetic of the gothic was captured so well and you could just picture our heroes standing on the hills, looking down into the moors and hearing the echoes of animals echoing all around.

This was also surprisingly funny! and easy to read! I did listen to the audiobook, which may have helped. Stephen Fry is such an excellent narrator and I think he did an amazing job on this.

I have had the entire Sherlock Holmes collection on my TBR for some time and reading this has REALLY bumped up my desire to get to those soon!

Επτά χρόνια μετά τη δολοφονία του, ο θρυλικός Σέρλοκ Χολμς επανεμφανίζεται (για τέταρτη και τελευταία φορά) σε μυθιστόρημα του σερ Άρθρουρ Κόναν Ντόυλ προκειμένου να εξιχνιάσει ένα ακόμη φαινομενικά άλυτο μυστήριο. Μόνο που αυτή τη φορά δεν είναι απολύτως βέβαιο αν η αναλυτική επαγωγική σκέψη και η λογική σύνθεση, για τις οποίες διακρίνεται ο ιδιοφυής ντετέκτιβ θα αποδειχθούν ικανές για τη λύση μιας υπόθεσης που όλο και περισσότερο φαίνεται να συνέχεται με τον κόσμο της μεταφυσικής. Τελικά, πόση αλήθεια μπορεί να περιέχεται στη φημολογούμενη εμφάνιση ενός σκύλου - φαντάσματος στον χερσότοπο που περικλείει το υποστατικό (σημ.: λατρεύω τις μεταφράσεις που μας συστήνουν ή/και υπενθυμίζουν τόσο εύηχες λέξεις που δυστυχώς χρησιμοποιούνται ολοένα και λιγότερο σήμερα!) της οικογένειας Μπάσκερβιλ και από τι άλλο, αν όχι από τον σκύλο των Μπάσκερβιλ, μπορεί να προέρχεται το ερεβώδες αυτό αλύχτημα που σκορπάει τον τρόμο στους κατοίκους του Ντέβονσαιρ;

I think this is a reread. It has to be. I even remembered a tiny, perfect atmospheric detail once I came across it. But there’s so much of it I didn’t remember. And much more puzzling is that I kept waiting for a vivid scene that isn’t even part of this story! Now I need to track down the story it does come from.

At one juncture I scoffed at Watson’s obtuseness (done to make the reader feel smarter?), yet the usual lively dialogue; the plot elements; and a magnificent sense of place work to make this the best-written of all the Sherlock stories I’ve read so far. After leaving London, you’ll feel as if you’ve been on the moors and dangerously close to the mire.

*

From Chapter 2, Holmes to Watson: It is a singular thing, but I find that a concentrated atmosphere helps a concentration of thought. I have not pushed it to the length of getting into a box to think, but that is the logical outcome of my convictions.

Super recomendado.

This is the first Sherlock Holmes story I've read, and what an excellent mystery it turned out to be!

Usually, with these old cozy detective novels I tend to guess who the criminal is (the stereotypical it's the butler! moment), and sometimes that lessens my enjoyment when the outcome is finally revealed, confirming my initial suspicions. So it was nice that in this book the culprit wasn’t who I first suspected, though I did suspect a couple of people in the Barkervilles' . . . ahem, area of influence, one of whom turned out to be right but not in the expected way. And what an ingenious explanation to the hound with a supernatural appearance that terrorises the Baskerville estate in Dartmoor!

Notes: It establishes setting in gaps between deductions, treating the moor like a living thing: an alien primordial wasteland.

This book was more like what I expected when I began reading the Sherlock Holmes novels, and would say this is my favourite of all nine of them. It’s an intriguing mystery with enough pursuit for it to be exciting. It feels unlikely that Holmes could solve this. I felt like there was enough throwing us off track to make me interested in the solution. There were moments when we got to see Sherlock’s wit, and moments when we could see the true friendship between him and Watson. They have such good banter in this one. I really enjoyed it, and the final recap chapter too. Overall, it was a lot of fun.

I read this years ago, and I am now bringing this review to Goodreads. (It also helps that there is a resurgence of S.H. adventures coming through my Little Free Library Shed, too.)

Who doesn't love Sherlock Holmes? Okay, if you are reading this, I am going to guess that you do.

Premise: Wealthy landowner Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead. Holmes and Dr. Watson must investigate the rumors that a ghostly hound is responsible for his death.

This story showcases the brilliance of Holmes deductive reasoning and the author's amazing writing capabilities in imagining and creating his detective character. I love the mental chess match Holmes plays with villains.

But...We must not forget his trusty side-kick, Dr. Watson who so painstakingly writes down all their adventures. We get his wit and rational thinking, as well.

This is a gripping page-turner that keeps you guessing until the very end. A true classic.

I think this is my favorite Arthur Conan Doyle story. What a combination; you have a mystery, a horror story with a demon like wolfhound, set on a dark English moor. I've never seen an English moor, but I've experienced them through the great books I've read. I've imagined Catherine stalking the moor in Wuthering Heights searching for her beloved Heathcliff. I've been with Jane Eyre on Marsh Glen when she heard the cry of Jane! Jane! Jane! from her forlorn Mr. Rochester, and I've felt the terror of being on Dartmoor at night with the howling of a demon hound close by. This is a great story and if you only read one Sherlock Holmes, this should be the one.
