I've never read any works from Edgar Allan Poe before, but I heard this is one of his best and I must say I am not disappointed. The Raven combined with Gustave Dore's haunting illustrations, creates this creepy, sort of nightmareish atmosphere that I very much enjoyed reading.

Last year I read Raven too. I forgot to mention it. We call this fellow Crow here! Maybe there is a difference but a similar word 'Ravan' is more famous here!

This was an amazing poem. Did you read it when you were a kid? Was there any nightmare then?
I had one.
After reading this poem, I listened to it in two voices. First was a baritone male voice with something sort of 'Giuseppe Verdi's - Dies Irae from his Requiem' in the background. Such spine-chilling music. The second one was a sharp female voice and in the background, another dreadful piece of horror-filled music! There was a dim light in my room and the yellow argon bulb blinked on and off with a changing stanza!

It had a stunning impact! Goosebumps! A lot of tapping! and a lot of rapping!

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.
....

....
And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted—nevermore!

Beautifully dark poem! My favorite poem ever. You could talk more about the symbolism in this poem longer than you could read the poem itself. Always a classic read.

Quite an interesting and memorable poem. It’s atmospheric and gripping. Also a very popular one, and with good reason. Though most people will of course know this poem from the many references in popular fiction. Ranging from the Simpsons, the pro wrestler known as Raven or even from Quoth, the raven in the Discworld series.

I never understood Poe, so never truly enjoyed him. The more I read fiction the better I can understand what I used to consider difficult pieces. To borrow an old cliche-like analogy, I saw this through 3D glasses. Poe literally transcends the mind to the place, the feel of the environment. I saw the images like I saw through the author's eyes. Amazing! When you can do that to someone with words on a page you've achieved greatness.
