My grandmother gave me this book as a child. She loved to sit in the backyard watching the birds and identifying them - and my sister and I would join her. This book is a great introduction for children to the various birds found in North America. It is done in a story format - and each bird has its own unique personality. The information, however, about their nesting habits, colorations, etc. are on target. Lovely.
We are about half-way through this book. We pick it up throughout the year to read a story here and there. It is wonderful. My only criticism is that it would’ve been nice if the pictures were in color as so much of the book describes what the birds look like. Nevertheless, it is a book I am glad to own. I have to say it is because of this book that my daughter genuinely enjoys bird-watching.
I bought an original 1919 first edition of this book at a barn sale recently, having no idea how old it was or that it was a first edition. It smells old and mildewy but I returned to it over and over again these last few months, reading a story or two at a time, in which Peter Rabbit introduces us to the birds of his woods and prairies. There is so much bird fact and lore in it that remains incredibly relevant today- and there is some language that should probably be left in 1919, too. Overall, loved the experience of reading this in the original form!
This is a fun book for children to learn about many different types of birds. Peter Rabbit wanders around his neighborhood and talks to the birds and describes them in detail. I just rated this down one star for this edition. It only has black and white photos. The description says they are in full color. I'm assuming that they are in color in the original edition.
I rate it so highly because of the value of the information it contains, as well as the fact that my children will better identify and understand the creatures around them after hearing their stories. However, Burgess has some idiosyncrasies (many of them likely simply of his time) which make his writing more dull and less concise than I think it needs to be.
