Almost one year later we finished this great book! Reading it chapter by chapter a day or two a week, we've savored the stories of Peter Rabbit (not Beatrix Potter's character) and the various birds he meets. We were able to identify many of our local birds through the descriptive details and "personalities" of the birds presented on these pages. This made learning effortless and fun as we grew to know the real birds as if characters in a story.

A bird field guide with a veneer of narrative. My kids enjoyed it. It encouraged me to look more closely at birds and think about how to describe them.

This book just drags on and on. It’s cute that Burgess tried to make a story incorporating tons and tons of facts about birds, but every time we meet a new bird, it’s more info and a little more to a story that isn’t going anywhere. The story does not progress. It’s just this happened, then this happened, then this happened. Sorry to say, we didn’t finish it.

The characters from the Burgess books will be a part of our lives forever & I’m truly grateful for that.

This book really does improve with time. I didn't love it when I read it to my daughter 5 years ago but it was much better this time around with my son.

Love the actual pictures in this edition so you don’t have to go find a picture of the bird. Love this book so much. Read for AO form 1!

OK, I loved this book. It was a little boring for my kids but we read it out on the deck in the sunny springtime and watched for birds we learned about in the book. It is a great memory.

Homeschool read aloud. Unfortunately I purchased the black and white edition but we used DK Birds of North America to look up color pictures and their audio app to listen to songs and calls. My kids really enjoyed this and are requesting more Burgess books. I however did not enjoy it as much. There were tons of cool facts that we can recall and that will help us as we move forward with a birds science unit. But to be honest the lack of plot got old. The book follows a year through the seasons from spring to spring. But each chapter is the same set up: Peter Rabbit is curious, meets a bird friend, describes the bird’s plumage, and then demands to see their nest. Not a complete waste of reading time by any means but definitely redundant. We’re following up this read with an art day to sketch and paint our favorite birds and label our pictures with facts.

Fantastic book. My kids loved it.

Burgess has such a way of describing the birds and the beauty of the scenery. Peter rabbit's curiosity is very fun.

We really enjoyed this book and learned many amazing things about birds and their habits. We were as curious as Peter was about each and every new bird in the book. We paired this with a color in field guide for visuals of each bird and then listened to each bird's call after each chapter. This was a wonderful read aloud that was enjoyed by all.

We enjoyed this one a lot. I love how the habits and features of the birds came right into the narrative. We learned so much!

Be aware that Jenny Wren is sometimes rather nasty, calling names and treating others a bit contemptuously.

A delightful little read that my kids very much enjoyed. They loved the interactions between Peter Rabbit and the birds that he met during his spring, summer, fall, and winter in the Dear Old Briar Patch. After meeting each bird, the kids were interested in looking at actual pictures of the birds. We also found some youtube videos of the bird calls that we could listen to as well. It was very educational and informative for all of us! It also sparked an interest in bird watching, an activity that we all enjoy doing together now. It's amazing how much of nature you fail to see by simply not looking up into the tree tops!

A solid four stars for me. An edition with colored illustrations of every bird (is there one?) would easily bump this up to a five star.
