A fine little Halloween tale featuring Alice Cooper as "the Showman." Beautifully drawn, too. It's no Sandman, but it's definitely worth reading if you're a Gaiman fan.

Neil Gaiman could simply write about a tree, and one would still love it. He has a certain charm in his writing, something effortless about him, that makes reading his books also seem effortless. Having said that, The Last Temptation is unlikely to be one of his finest works. This wasn't actually intended to be a book to begin with. Neil Gaiman had gotten together with rock singer Alice Cooper for the latter's next album. And from there the idea to develop a 3-part comic book also developed.

The Last Temptation narrates the story of Steven, a young kid, who is enticed by a showman (depicted as Cooper himself) to join his traveling show so that he never has to grow up. The 3-part tale is about the seduction, temptation and eventual redemption of Steven. The initial part of the story isn't really compelling enough, but Gaiman's words do make you want to continue (our own temptation?). The third act, titled Cleansed by Fire, does make for an impressive finale though, where Steven has to figure out the choices he needs to make. So the story does conclude in a stronger manner than it began.

The illustrations by Michael Zulli, who has worked before with Gaiman on the Sandman series, are amazing and at times make up for the lackluster story arc. Overall, The Last Temptation is still a fine read, something which would be completed in one sitting, though there isn't much of the "extraordinary" in it that we come to accept of Gaiman.

Idk I honestly just didn’t like it all that much.
I really couldn’t tell you why. It wasn’t bad. I guess I just wasn’t feeling it. I will admit I don’t really care for the art. Simply my aesthetics, but I’m sure it had some bearing.

Anyways I need to listen to the album and hopefully that improves my opinion.

I wanted to love this, but didn't really.

The art is beautiful: sharp lines with subtle shading, exactly the way I like. The story is creepy, with hints of hopes, dreams, fears, desires, despairs - more stuff I like. But the characters felt flat. Steven doesn't get much depth except being bullied a bit, while the showman isn't showing any charisma in trying to win the boy over. I liked the part about the newspaper history and the concept of 'future potential'.

I could look at the pretty pictures again. But the content felt mostly forgettable.

Neil Gaiman combined with Alice Cooper is kind of my dream. This story felt so nostalgic, it has that sense of creepiness surrounding Halloween that makes every coming of age story feel more real.

Also have to give a nod to being able to listen to some of Alice Coopers music rather than reading parts of this, because it's just word for word the same.

I was fascinated with this unique collaboration. Gaiman's wrote from Cooper's music, or was it the other way around? Not sure, but I thoroughly enjoyed both.

One of the only 'graphic novels' I have ever read. Of course I had to read it because the music cd it goes hand in hand with is one of my favorite Alice Cooper albums.

When I first read it, I had no idea who Neil Gaiman was or what the big deal was about him. Now I do and it almost makes me want to check out his previous graphic novel work, Sandman (I think).

Anyway, this graphic novel gives a story to a collection of songs. It's a tale about the pull between good and evil that affects one young man. The story certainly didn't disappoint me and the pictures that went with it were interesting to look at.

Chances are I will read this again and again until the poor thing falls apart while I listen to the music that accompanies it. =)

There’s an adequate but sadly unrealised storyline lost within the pages of The Last Temptation, its potential never fully achieved with this slight tale of a mysterious Showman and the young man he wishes to tempt. Gaiman’s writing is decent, and Zulli’s art is often of a fine quality, yet the presented drama never really grabbed me, lacking the necessary moments to thrill, trouble or shock as I would have liked. I’m an Alice Cooper fan, so the narrative here adds a little more to the performance story of this famous character, but the moody nature of the plot is quite mundane, never rising beyond ordinary to grasp attention.

I love stories like this and what better combination to create this kind of tale but Neil Gaiman and Alice Cooper! Granted there isn't anything massively new in the story itself but the style of the story and illustrations gives it an extra punch that is lacking in other similar tales, and it has Alice Cooper in it. Okay I'll admit, I am a little biased, but still this is an enjoyable story with a lovely dose of creepiness and fabulous bonus materials showing how the idea came about so if you like Gaiman or Cooper this is for you. If you just want a bit of a scare this is for you too.
