A nice summary of Rand's philosophical work . Rading this book made it easier for me to understand her objectivist Philosophy, although I find some of her philosophies not relevant in my time, and place.
Know your enemy inside and out. That is my purpose for reading Ayn Rand.
This “book” is a collection of excerpts from her most famous works. Those moments in her novels where the main characters get up on soapboxes and spout the snake oil this woman of contradictions was selling.
The only stand-alone part of this collection is the essay 《For the New Intellectual》which spans pages one through fifty-eight. That’s all I wanted to read because the rest of the collection is, as I’ve said, excepts from 《We the Living,》《Anthem,》《The Fountainhead,》and《Atlas Shrugged,》and I’ve already read those books.
I don’t agree with any of her conclusions. I think, once upon a time, I subscribed to her two-dimensional theories. But then I educated myself on the details of the issues and the modern revelations that have been made since the majority of her most influential works were written (1950’s - 1960’s). She’s outdated and one-tracked. In some ways, her works influenced endless politicians and judges who control our three branches of government. She lived through an age that was dominated by the New Deal and Great Society programs that she herself benefited from (evidence exists of social security checks cashed by her).
Ayn Rand is a persuasive writer who tells magnetic stories. It’s unfortunate she was a cheerleader for selfishness and greed.
Very interesting ideas to think about. I found myself agreeing with the idea of how merit is punished and weakness is celebrated in society. Yet I can't quite agree with the whole of her philosophy. Or with the way she characterizes other beliefs. The last speech got very repetitive and too drawn out. Giving this book 4 stars not for agreeing or enjoying the read, but for the thought this engenders.
La primer parte es filosofía e historia pura, tiene sesgos propios de una forma de pensar que no se cuestiona las cosas, te obliga a pensar de un solo modo bajo el precepto que es el mejor y único modo
Could the author be a little less verbose? She was obviously paid by the word. Definitely alot of food for thought here and passages of profundity, but the collection could be better organized in order to better see the forest for the trees.
