A nice book. The totalitarian world created here seems scary but the same time is very engrossing. The way the story unfolds one feels sorry, angry and as desperate as Offred. Beautifully written book with the consequences leading to the totalitarian world seems perfect.

I think I expected a bit more. The approach is unusual but I didn't enjoy the language.

une dystopie qui aurait pu être sympa, malheureusement elle ne l'est pas

This was certainly a creepy book. I wonder if Margaret Atwood felt some sense of deja vu during events of the last administration. The political climate of The Handmaid's Tale gave off disturbing parallels with some of the more fundamental philosophies of the last few years. As I said, creepy.

Struggled to get into it and had slight difficulties to appreciate it for at least half of it's length, probably more related to my own situation and inability to concentrate and get consistency in my reading. But it grew and the second half of the book was really enjoyable. It therefore touched closely to four starts which it likely would have gotten if I read it again.

One of the most terrifying cautionary tales about a dystopian future I've ever read, mainly because it was already all too familiar in parts. Very well done- the emotions were poignant and real, the main character's emotional story (and breaking) was well told, and the unfolding of the shape of this society was revealed in pieces, gradually, by showing and not telling, and the more you read the more you understand and the more you understand the more you want to immediately build some kind of bunker somewhere and give up on mankind in general.

Oh my goodness, Margaret Atwood! This book is a masterpiece. I was hooked from the poetic and mysterious start to the brilliant last chapter. This is a must read!

An amazing read for those that enjoy futuristic books. After a civil war our country turns into a world we could never have expected. This story takes place in Gilead ruled by our newly formed Totalitarian government after a civil war.

Young women, known as Handmaids, are forced into sexual slavery in hope of births to secure the future of human race when birth rates are dramatically falling. These women are called Handmaids. Handmaids are not only raped by their masters, they are often tortured. Yet this is a better existence for them than being sent to The Under. The Under is a place where they work until they die in a desert land destroyed by nuclear warfare, Hell on Earth.

As a woman I'd hope I could be a Handmaid as strong as Offred. Offred is June's new Gilead Handmaid name taken from the last name of her commander and his wife. Offred becomes a "leader" of the Handmaids and holds a prime role in the "Resistance". Offred's rebukes and guidance helps many Handsmaid's but does cause harm to come to other Handmaids.

This book is utterly horrifying. The idea behind the storyline is already happening in some parts of the world and the frightening thing is that I can see it happening here with relative ease. I can see the attitude of "sit back and wait to see what happens" as the country and/or world is changed into this complete feminist and human rights nightmare. The book is amazingly well written and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
