I actually listened to the BBC broadcast of this book. I don't usually like science fiction/futuristic books, but I enjoyed this, especially the performance.
wonderful book I got attached to the characters, especially John and Jenin. The book made me cry because of the violence that happened in Gilead, and the idea itself is so unexpected and clever. The book is unfortunate, But I am happy that I read this piece of art.
This was a book my son read in IB in high school, thought I should give it a go. It was frightening in a realistic way...could we go there? There are people that would! Made me think about who I am as a woman and what I would do if I was stripped down to this reality. Can people really live this way? Should they?
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a haunting tale of the loss of women’s freedoms and options in a world arbitrarily controlled by an elite group of male leadership. Perhaps even more relevant today than when it was published in 1985, it demands the reader take a close look at what we value as individuals, and how easily we can lose what is important to us when another deems us of little consequence.
Be wary of Government and "temporary" situations. It's slow, creates a dim picture of the future and the role of women, and fear of a smaller following generation.
I personally had a hard time getting into this book. It didn't live up to the hype branding it as a timeless historical must-read provoking thought. I love Margaret Atwoods novels, and I don't regret reading Handmaids Tale, but it just didn't live up to My expectations.
