I thought the ending, which to me, was totally unlikely ruined a good book. I enjoyed it up until Sid Halley was caught and then unlikely freed. It was too much for my imagination and the book lost me after that.

This was my second DF book. I like his writing style, use of language - it feels very gentlemanly, English, but I’m not suggesting pretentious. Strong main character.
Didn’t love the subject matter of this story and also found the ending unsatisfactory.

Another enjoyable Dick Francis book. Alongside the whodunit storyline, I learned a bit about treatment for leukaemia in children, prosthetic arms, and the creation of media campaigns (in the 1990’s or early 2000’s).
And, just saying, audio books are the best for long budget plane flights. :-)

When you pick up a DF book you know somewhat what you are going to get. A genuinely nice guy hero who gets embroiled in a situation not of his making but from which he must get out nonetheless. DF writes emotions superbly. The dilemma that Sid faces here becomes real and even though you may suspect what will eventually happen, it still manages to punch you in the gut to read it.

Well written if somewhat grisly at times. Sid Halley is a champion jockey who lost a hand in a racing accident and is now an investigator. He is asked to find the person who is mutilating horses. His discovery of the perpetrator makes Sid a pariah in the public eye and puts him in harm's way.

This was a great re-read/listen for me. Something to keep me busy as my husband had knee-replacement surgery. Of course, all the discussion of his hand prosthetic was a bit on-point, but still a great story and so well narrated.

Outstanding

Dick Francis delivers in this action packed thriller that is impossible to put down. The hero, Sid Halley, is real and brilliant. He is a great guy who gives the impression of being ordinary but in reality, he achieves his goals with honor and integrity. Highly recommended.

Such a disturbing story. A little light on the horse racing ‘industry’, as I always enjoy learning about other aspects of the profession, though the horsenut composition had it’s moment. It was rather more of a trot through the minefields of the mind. And slander/libel - a whole writing genre perfected by some newspapers and words with which 21C society seems unfamiliar.
