Enjoyable and engrossing mystery set in Norway, for the most part. Part travelogue in that we see Norway through our hero's eyes as he travels about conducting his investigation into the disappearance of an English jockey and a large amount of Norse racetrack cash. I could feel the cold and the damp, enjoyed the secondary characters, especially Erick and Odin, and tried along with our hero to figure out who had lied or withheld the truth. An unexpected ending was a good payoff.

There is intrigue and suspense in this novel set in the world of horse racing. British Jockey Club investigator David Cleveland is sent Norway to discover the truth about the disappearance of champion British jockey, Robert Sherman. Sherman disappeared from Oslo just before the National, a race he seemed certain to win. The Norwegian Jockey Club has asked its British counterpart for assistance and, while most believe that the missing jockey has stolen money and fled, Cleveland is not so sure. He becomes a target when three attempts are made on his life. There is a lot more involved than just missing money and horse racing.
This story was originally published in the early 1970’s. There are some interesting differences between this world and today but the story has interesting characters, a good plot, a unique setting (Northern European horse racing scene) and good pacing that makes it an engaging read.

Dick Francis is one of the few prolific mystery writers whose books are primarily stand-alones. Although all his settings involve horses and/or racing in some way, there is an incredible variety to his work so it doesn't get stale. In Slay Ride, the main character is investigating the disappearance of an English jockey in Oslo.

Dick Francis novels age well. This is probably my fourth or fifth re-read of Slay Ride, and even though I know by now who "did it," it's still a delight to read. His dialogue in particular is clever and thoughtful, and his protagonist smart and unassuming. It's nice to leave the usual environs of British racing and spend a little time in Norway.

Classic Dick Francis. This time we travel to Norway. I'm cold just reading this book.

We get a great Francis "everyman" in David Cleveland. Jockey Club investigator and all-around smart, nice guy. He gets in danger (as you would expect), barely escapes with his life (naturally) and saves the day.

Plus, this book is as old as I am, and it is still a fun read. One of my favorite authors of all time.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the last Dick Francis book I read. I now remember i totally enjoyed it, just as I did with this one. David Cleveland has been sent to Oslo to investigate the theft of the days receipts at their racetrack, along with the disappearance of one of the jockeys. From the start it appears that Mr. Clevelands presence is not welcomed by everyone. As David uncovers the clues the reader is given bit by bit of the solution, but can you really guess who did it and why? Great story line and brilliant ending. I must remember to take the next opportunity to read another Dick Francis tale.

Another solid thriller in the Dick Francis collection. There's not much actual riding in this one, but the mystery part is a step above the usual fare from Francis. THis time the setting is the racing world of Norway and an investigation into the disapearance of a visiting English jockey. The cast of characters is well contouerd and includes some staples of the author: the introverted, smart young man with a stubborn streak and a strong sense of justice, the bullying industrial magnates, the affable rich patrons of the racetrack, the vulnerable love interest, the dangerous henchmen, etc. THe strength of the book is really in the gripping narrative, it took me just one afternoon to read through.

David Cleveland, investigator with the British Jockey Club is summoned to Oslo Norway to look into the disappearance of jockey Bob Sherman. It seems several bags of money are missing as well, with all fingers pointing at Bob as the thief. Bob's dead body is located and then the search is on to figure out who killed Bob and why. To complicate matters, someone clearly doesn't want David investigating and seeks to have him dead as well.
Re-read in 2012. Had a hard time following this one and keeping names straight. Didn't enjoy it as much as the others I've read.

Vintage Dick Francis. I thought I'd read them all, but I found this one at a recent University of Chicago Library book-sale. Okay, $1 may have been a lot to pay for this 1973 un-classic, but do you know how rare it is for me to find a Dick Francis book I haven't read!? It was really good too. I read his latest recently and was deeply disappointed. I fear he may have lost his edge. So it was nice to go back to his better years. This one is lean and spare with everything that makes the formula work so well for him, and very little that's extraneous. Great bus reading!

Excellent story. David an investigator for the jockey club goes to Norway and becomes embroiled in an investigation over Bob an English jockey who apparently stole a Norwegian Race club days takings. Bob has vanished from the face of the Earth.

David almost drowns in an apparent boating accident and his Norwegian friend Arne a security guard at the race course. Eventually Bob is found dead and innocent. Several attempts are made on David’s life and he figures out why Bob was killed.

SPOILERS AHEAD

David determines Arne betrayed him for a director st the club. Bob was smuggling information about a rich oil field which was used to make a killing on the stock market. In the end David finds out the son of the director saw his father murder Bob. The assassins hired by the director murder Arne and David in the cold Norwegian climate solves the case.
