This was probably the worst book I have ever read. It had absolutely no relevance to the first two books in the series. I was excited to read how the City of Ember came to be and the Disaster that happened on Earth. Instead I received 300 pages of the author's political and religious beliefs and a story about completely irrelevant characters. The story itself had no real plot and the characters had no development. Finally during the last THREE PAGES of the book the author attempted to tie this book with the first two in a way that made absolutely no sense and had absolutely no depth. If anyone decides to read this series I would recommend skipping this prequel.

This book was great! The beginning wasn’t the best but as you got more into the book, you got more interested in Nickie’s life. The ending was very surprising!!

Having previously read DuPrau's "The City of Ember" and "The People of Sparks" and thoroughly enjoying both, I was really looking forward to reading "The Prophet of Yonwood" and I had very high expectations for the third book! However, I was very disappointed.
I found all the characters in "The Prophet of Yonwood" to be quite flat and the storyline was random and unrelated to Ember. I was eager to find out the history of Ember and the Builders, as this is the prequel to the series, but it actually had nothing to do with the creation of Ember, except for the last chapter- maybe 15 pages or so. The story also leaves the reader with many questions and cliffhangers- but absolutely not in a good way. DuPrau will begin to discuss one topic, such as Nickie's grandfather's journal or the ghost in the bedroom, but we never do get an explanation. Many characters, like Hoyt McCoy, are also undeveloped and leave you wondering why they were even needed in the story in the first place.
Overall, a very disappointing book. I had high hopes for the "Ember" prequel, but nearly every element of the story- characters, plot, setting- fell flat and left me confused, let down, and unsatisfied.

I liked this book a lot for a few reasons: one, this was the first prequel I have ever read, second, I loved the concept and everything put into it

There’s a big difference between showing and telling in writing. This book was more about telling. Read the other reviews. Jeanne DuPrau lost the story for the sake of her beliefs. She could have done much better if she had focused on the story instead.

I wouldn't have rated the book so badly, but it didn't relate AT ALL to the first two books, which was really disappointing. There was one or two references (it was a 'prequel') but it could have been WAYYYY better. :(

This book is the prequel to the last two books in the series, so it kind of gives you an idea of what it was like before the disastrous war.

One word: boooooooooring.

I'll just say that I had high hopes for this book because the last book wasn't the best. I guess I'm disappointed with this book.

Like the second book, this book has annoying characters, but on to of that, this book is pretty boring. Probably because there were no fantasy-ish things involved. I mainly read books that have things to do with fantasy, even sci-fi will do, but because this book had none what so ever, I found it boring. As you can see, I'm quite a picky reader.

Why! Can't they just continue the adventure of Lina and Doon? That's what I thought at first...

I actually really liked this book, but the religious part made me want to stop reading. But because of the religion, action came in! I know a lot of people disagree with this book, I think it's just fine. Actually I think that this book should be a extra or the forth book. It doesn't make sense the way it's the third book. I liked the little twist in the end, but I'm getting tired of little twists in the end. It makes the first hundred pages a little bit boring, but the last 70 pages more exciting. I prefer books that follow the series, and that every part of it is exciting and interesting.

This book is the end of the 'Ancient Time' and the City of Ember is the beginning of the 'Future'. That's what I like. But then again, this should be a extra book. Also, looks like some has taken over the books and started something new. Someone who likes war and wants it to keep happening (not like that's not interesting).

Okay, okay, I get it. Most people hate this book, I'll stop writing and you can start writing in the comments,

Should I rate this book 3 or 4 or 5, for now it's a 4. Please tell me what I should rate, I'm highly confused by the way this book goes.

The Prophet of Yonwood Book Review

t‘The Prophet of Yonwood’, by Jeanne Duprau is a very enticing story. It’s full of friendship and love, as well as oddities and dilemmas. The genre is science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone, but not if you’re looking for a fast-paced action novel. This book is also the third in it’s series and you should probably read the first two if you want to understand it. Although this book has different characters than the first two, it ties together with a very surprising ending in the end.

tThis book is about an 11-year old girl named Nickie and her trip to Yonwood, North Carolina. When she and her aunt go there to fix up and sell her dead great-grandfather’s old mansion, Greenhaven, she has no idea what’s in store for her.

t While she’s there, Nickie sets three goals for herself: 1. Keep Greenhaven 2. Fall in love 3. Help the world. Trying to fulfill number three, Nickie learns about a strange old woman, who is in a coma, supposively delivering massages from God. The town calls her a prophet, and tries to be good to avoid an oncoming disaster. Nickie also attempts this, resulting in meeting new and strange friends.

tOne of my favorite characters in this book is Nickie’s new found dog, Otis. She keeps him in secret from her aunt for one of her new friends, Amanda. Over the time they spend together, Otis captures Nickie’s heart and will capture yours, too. But, when the prophet’s directions get out of hand, Nickie faces decisions and challenges that will affect Otis and her.

tJeanne Duprau’s writing style is very interesting and descriptive. Most of the time it is serious, but sometimes funny. Here is a quote from the book: “It was a blustery morning. Big heaps of cloud rushed across the sky and the wind was chilly. A few dead leaves skittered along the sidewalk.”

tAs you can see, ‘The Prophet of Yonwood’ is a very touching and enjoyable story. I loved this book a lot and think it was one of the best out of the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
