Excellently researched and easy to read. Historical context helps with the understanding of foods mentioned in the books as well as simply acknowledging our own food histories. Though many of the recipes seem more trouble than they're worth to make for the modern cook, the experience of taking the time to make foods the way they were by our ancestors seems a valuable use of time. I will definitely be trying some of the recipes.

Someone returned this to the library where I work, and I thought, "I've always loved those Little House books! Maybe they'll have some good recipes I've read about as a child!" There were definitely recipes I remembered reading about when I was young. Fish, pork, molasses-on-snow candy, cracklin' bread. These and many more were part of what I loved about reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's books.

I especially loved that the author took the time to explain differences in the way many things were made during Laura's time vs. how we make them today. It was informative and enjoyable to read.

(Only three stars because I'm not actually making any of the recipes.)

That was a lot of fun to read, the illustrations are incomparable, and pieces of text from the books introduce recipes. I can see why reading Farmer Boy made my nephew Jacob hungry. The descriptions of meals from Farmer Boy were splendid and mouthwatering!

This was an excellent book. I look forward to reading it again. It was filled w very interesting info about frontier life and cooking and the popular foods back then. I think this wonderful book would appeal to a lot of people: Laura fans, history buffs, cooks/bakers, and even art fans. Garth Williams' gorgeous drawings are throughout the book.

Very impressive all around. Ms. Walker not only recreated seemingly every food ever mentioned in L.I. Wilder's books but she used traditional cooking methods as much as possible. The reason I consider it a book I "read" is that each recipe is proceeded by an excerpt from its book and background information about the food, its source, and importance then and now. Recommend to any fan of the books. I also like how Walker points out how much more food the Wilders had access to versus the Ingalls. I think any avid "Little House" book reader will enjoy that as well.

It sounded interesting and the references to various foods were quoted from the various books. As for the recipes, I would probably not make many of them. This book was a gift from my daughter and we both love The Litte House on the Prairie books. I love to read cookbooks but this one was just "okay".

Horrible formatting for Kindle version!

Glad it was Kindle Unlimited! If I'd bought it, I'd be demanding my money back. I'm sure the printed versions are wonderful, but don't waste your time on the Kindle version. It's rare for me to give up on a book, but I couldn't handle this one.

This is just really fascinating, especially if you enjoy cooking, I suppose. I do, and so maybe I'm not being fair to those who don't. But the way that human beings figure out how to make things happen, the trial and error involved, and the final product.... I always wonder if it's not colored a good bit by what we're used to, or what in our lifespan is considered new and novel
