This book has an impressive amount of historical cooking research that went into it. I especially enjoyed it because I just reread the Little House series.

Idk how I feel about this being marked as "read" because this is one that will be referred to continually and at random pages but I feel it is necessary to note how well thought out and detailed this cookbook is! My mother gave it to me as a gift and I am in love! If you enjoy LHOTP, this is a pantry staple for sure!

This was great! I bought it because we were reading the little house books, and Lyra said how she wanted to make some of the food. There is a paragraph about the food from the book, then a little history of it, and then the closest recipe that the author could make/find. Many of the ingredients are specialty items now, but we have already tried a few of the recipes and it has been fun.

I just find the frontier life fascinating. I can't help it. I always wanted the recipes from the series, and now they are mine forever.

As a kid I had a paperback Scholastic book club edition of this, so I was excited to see the new edition with photographs! While the content is still all fantastic, this almost feels too fancy to cook from - I don't want to spill on the glossy photos and nice hardback cover!

This was a fascinating introduction to the food pioneers ate. It was well written and the tie-ins to the books were delightful. I recommend this for anyone who grew up reading the Little House books and enjoys cooking.

I picked up this book for my daughter who is reading the series. I expected it to be a kitschy collection of recipes. I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of historical data and background. The author has created an excellent window into the era's culinary history. I don't plan to make any of the recipes, but they look far more authentic than I would have expected. The book is also very fun to read. :-)

It's not that I want to utilize the recipes in this finely researched cookbook. In fact, most of them sounds bland. (especially the numerous cornmeal recipes where they all pretty much uses the same ingredients) However the book made me feel nostalgic for the simple times gone past. I remember reading the food porn in the little house books as a youngster. It made me realize at the time that most foods can actually be made at HOME. And it was GOOD. It was a revelation for me. Duncan hines was not necessary to make a cake. Biscuits need not come from mcdonalds. Lemonade can be homemade, not bought from the refrigerated section at the grocery store. It instilled self reliance for me when it came to cooking. And this book is a lovely reminder of that for me.

This is such a wonderful book because it has authentic recipes, not just watered down versions of real pioneer food. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the Little House series.

Definitely recipes worth trying in the book. If you're intrested in recipes that are made in a little house series this is definitely one of the best books I found so far.

I loved this book primarily because of how much I love the Little House on the Prairie books (a lot!!). This book is a combination of recipes re-created from the Little House books, as well as commentary on how frontier cooking worked and how the culinary arts have evolved over the last hundred years in the United States.

Many of these recipes are completely unfeasible for a non-hunter, non-farmer living in the modern world (where in the world would I get starlings to cook a blackbird pie??), but many of them are also very doable (particularly the baked goods), and I'm excited to try them. I think I'm going to make frontier-style blueberry pudding tonight and test it out :)
