I have read this book many, many, many times, beginning at about age 12. Although I can't say the writing is of the finest literary quality, I love this book and find something new in it every time I read it. It consists of short stories set in the same world as the grown-up Anne Shirley Blythe which vary from romance to comedy to drama. My teenage self favored the romances, but I find myself enjoying the other stories more now in my 40s. If you have ever read and enjoyed Anne of Green Gables, you will enjoy this book.
Edit: Wow, I stand corrected. I read some other reviews and was surprised at how many people didn't like this story collection because it wasn't focused on Anne and her family. I guess I can see how someone could feel that way, although obviously I don't :).

Several years ago I went through this thing of reading everything ever written by LM Montgomery...but missed this book of short stories, so it was a nice surprise to happen upon this volume of short stories at the library. Reading her always puts me in this funny whimsical mood where I want to can strawberries or visit orphanages or write poems...

I enjoyed most of these short stories. There was only the one written from the point of view of the guests at a wedding that was hard to read. It was rather annoying reading people's thoughts, which were mostly very superficial and judgmental. The other stories were vey nice, if perhaps a bit predictable. ;)
I never thought I'd say this, though, but it did get very annoying how Mrs. Dr. Blythe was refered to as such a wonderful person in every story, but she wasn't a character in any of them. Please, now! Was there NO ONE ELSE these people looked up to? That was a little too much even for an Anne fan like myself.

I wasn’t really enjoying what I was reading, and ended up reading perhaps half the stories and then skimming/skipping the rest. I felt no affinity to the characters, and the brief, passing mentions of Anne/Gilbert were just few and far between. These are all acquaintances of theirs, but for me, I would have preferred some short stories about Anne & Gil directly.

For me, this is the last book in the series which I’ve re-read altogether in September (I don’t have The Blythes Are Quoted, since it’s a silly price) and I think the series went gradually downhill after the Blythe children became involved. I get it was to keep it appealing to the younger generation, but for those of us who have grown up on the love story of Anne & Gil, then it’s just disappointing to see the focus so majorly changed and to see the greatest love story (!) reduced to the sidelines.

Always happy to re-enter the world of Anne Shirley (or Anne Blythe, as she is known in these stories). This is a collection of 14 short stories about characters incidental to the Blythes - their friends/neighbors/acquaintances, etc. Everyone knows the Anne and Gilbert (and their children), and most - but not all - have quite favorable opinions of them. Some of these stories take place after the original Anne series, so warnings for spoilers, if you care for such.

There is sweetness and light, but an equal amount of darkness in this collection. We have hints of the supernatural in "Fancy's Fool;" this is followed by a quite terrifying version of a titular "Dream Come True." There are quite a few long-lost lovers reuniting, as well as a sense of Anne's all-encompassing imagination (the aforementioned "Fancy's Fool" and "The Cheated Child" both feature young children with big imaginations who always want to find that comforting, magical place where they will know real love). There's a story featuring a King relative, always a pleasant surprise! There are even connected stories - "Retribution" and "A Commonplace Woman" both feature the Anderson family of some repute.

My favorites were probably "Fool's Errand," about a man who returns to marry a woman he'd met as a girl thirtysomething years before, just as he'd promised, and "A Commonplace Woman," which tells the secret life story of the seemingly unloved and unmissed Ursula Anderson while her family waits for her to die.

An excellent collection, with probably too many mentions of the Blythes to truly be enjoyed if reading it straight after the original series.
