This is now one of my favorite books. I have been a fan of Brian Jacques' Redwall series for some time and this led me to try another of his books. This story was entertaining and fun to read. The main character is a difficult person to portray due to his strange attributes but the author does a great job of making him a character the reader can relate to. The unique word choices that Jacques uses creates a swashbuckling feel for this read that is a good contrast for those that love the fantasy genre.

The story follows a boy named Ben and his dog Ned. These two share a unique bond as they have been blessed by an angel to be able to hear each others thoughts. They also will live forever. These two travel the world doing good and helping people. This adventure leads them on a journey with a french pirate and eventually to a town that needs their help in Europe. I recommend this book for all ages.

very good action, fast paced, and humorous. loved it. but i gotta say, it makes the main characters (ben and ned) seem really cold hearted and inhuman when they just ditch everything like that. but still good.

I’ve been planning to finish this series for years and years... though I definitely feel a little too old for it now, I’m glad I held out (and I have one more to go!). Honestly still one of the saddest stories ever. Remembering why I was so affected by the first book now.

Someone referred to "The Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" trilogy as their favorite comfort series. It's impossible to put it any more succinctly than that.

A common criticism of this book include:
1) Ned & Ben lives are unchallenging, making friends, not starving to death and their plans working out etc.
2) The good guys are "too good" and bad guys are "too bad"

Needless to say the book is essentially perfect. Comfort series is my new favorite term.

Once more, Jacques proved to be an excellent storyteller. The characters are so compelling. I love Ben and Ned! The story is somewhat fractured, with the first and second parts having seemingly nothing to do with each other. But everything in the story has a reason and a purpose, and everything comes together quite nicely in some unexpected ways. Jacques is able to make many things conclude perfectly without seeming contrived. The sdventures of the boy and his dog may go on forever, but I wonder if there will ever be a conclusion for them?

I liked this a little more than book one, but I'm beginning to think Brian Jacques' writing just isn't my style. I kept waiting for The Angel's Command to excite me. Instead, I only felt a mild interest throughout the story. I'll still read the third book to finish the trilogy, but I won't go in with high expectations.

Every bit as good as the first book. It is kind of like two stories for every book, with only two of the same characters: Ben, a fourteen-year-old boy that never grows old, and Ned, a black Labrador. In the first book, the first story was Ben aboard the Flying Dutchman, and the second story was Ben in a peaceful village called chapelvale. The first story in this book had Ben aboard an honorable French Buccaneer vessel. The second story placed the boy and his dog in the woodlands, on the border of Spain and France, where he and new friends take on a bloodthirsty band of savage Rosan. I loved this book!

Disappointing after how much I liked the first book of the series, Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. Read the first book. Skip this one. The plot is just too disjointed and the book doesn't hold together.

I have been avoiding his Redwall series because talking animals seemed cheesy. Here is a different series so I that I would give his storytelling a try. I loved the pirate tale at the beginning. Very cool stuff. The dog was really interesting too. Overall, not too bad. Better than I was expecting. Not for me but well-written nevertheless. =)
