Listening to these on audiobook and reliving my childhood. In my memory this was my least favorite. Revisiting it’s quite fantastic and a wonderful follow up to Redwall. The villains are over the top, the continuation of the characters stories is well done. The action is still absolutely savage and accented by moments of wholesomeness and coziness. It’s a great follow up that builds on the world setup by the first two novels.

Really loved this one. Mossflower jumped into the past, Mattimeo took back up with the creatures from the first Redwall and was a really fun set of adventures. The children are kidnapped by an old foe and going to be sold as slaves so Matthias and several other Redwallers set off to save them, while those left back at the Abbey face their own threats.

Jacques formula is a little repetitive but it's sweet and adventurous, and that consistency is likely part of what makes this so endearing to children (remember rewinding VHS movies over and over and watching on repeat?). I really enjoyed the pacing and variety of characters, challenges, and the growth of the creatures and story in Mattimeo; looking forward to more.

Another solid entry in the Redwall series. I thought Mossflower was better, but this was excellent, probably better than his first book. Surprisingly dark for a children’s book, it’s probably not meant to be read by children so much as early teen/pre-teen.

A staple of Brian Jacques’ storytelling method seems to be multiple concurrent stories unfolding at once. He established that in the second book and did it again in this one. I expect it to be a staple throughout the series.

The stakes were surprisingly high in this novel, that impressed me. Maybe my only criticism of this novel is that it was too short. For the amount of events that took place, it might have honestly been better if it had been a little longer, so that a little more development could have happened. Either way, this was an excellent addition to the Redwall series, picking up just a few years after the first book ends chronologically. I hope you remembered everyone’s names!

Edit: After thinking about this for a while, I believe that this is better than Mossflower.

Has all the heart of the first book with the first book with all the adventure of the second book, it was great to explore other regions of mossflower country. Could have leaned into the coming of age story a little bit harder though

My first introduction to fantasy as an eleven year old. Still has a very special place in my heart. <3

Enjoyed reading this to my children, which enables me to catch up on a series I wish I had read as a child. It continues to be quite evident that Jacques was writing children's literature for a different time. I'm just not sure you can find children's lit these days where the good guys are willing to actually kill the bad guys.

The beginning of this novel was super fun, and the end was sheer delight. It was quite slow through the middle, but the end would not have been nearly as delightful as it was without that slow middle. Good times with rich characters.

Continuing this series that was a favorite of my children when they were young. The books are not that different from each other. A bad guy & gang threaten the peaceful - and heroes emerge for a happy ending.

Mattimeo gives "Redwall" fans a sense of adult storytelling that is appealing to the older fans of this series. Mattimeo is the son of Matthias, Warrior of Redwall. He and a few other woodland children are captured by the sly fox, Slagar the Cruel. Matthias then sets out to find them with the help of a few followers.

A must read for Redwall fans!

When a masked fox known as Slagar the Cruel steals all of the children of Redwall Abbey away, it is up to Matthias the warrior and friends to save them. Can they save them from a horrible fate and will Redwall be safe upon their return? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a pretty good installment of the Redwall series. I read this book then saw the Season 2 of the Redwall animated series which was Book 3 of this series in it which is as close to the book as you can get. If you enjoy fantasy stories about animals, be sure to check this series out at your local library and wherever books and ebooks are sold.
