Though I read these books a long time ago, pretty much all of the Redwall series books - and this one, in particular - always bring up memories of Jacques' rather detailed descriptions of the feasts that were prepared during various scenes.

I also remember this book being the one where the series started to drag for me, and besides the book following this one (Martin the Warrior) I don't remember if I bothered to read any more of the series after that.

Can’t accuse Jacques of not playing the hits. Smack dab in the middle, quality-wise is the first 5 books of the series. The best yet in one realm: Jacques has now figured out at at a genius level the way to maximize plot momentum in toggling across his storylines; the ends of chapters in “Salamandastron” are like big giant neon invitations to my dopamine receptors to keep reading.

Loved it. Brian Jacques is a force to be reckoned with.

(I've read the entire series)

This is probably my second favorite in the series so far. The book starts out just brutal and maybe it's because I'm a father now that the beginning was more heart wrenching but this series can get really intense sometimes! As always, I read these books and want nothing more than to be able to live at Redwall for the rest of my life. On top of this, the badgers are usually some of my favorite characters so I love getting a story that focuses more on them. I'm also really surprised that I actually kind of felt bad for some of the rats for the first time in one of the books. Really I can't think of any complaints per se, just not quite five star material.
