The reading level is marked as 2.1 (early second grade) but the content seems more appropriate for preschoolers who are just about to embark on their tooth-losing adventures. My library has two versions of this: same text, different illustrators. This version: illustrations copyright 2000 by Joe Mathieu; the older version: illustrations copyright 1981 by Roy McKie. The McKie version begins with a very friendly-looking "red-headed uncle" while Mathieu's red-headed uncle is outright scary -- a bit jarring since he's first person you encounter! I also noticed that McKie's family-at-the-dinner-table is Caucasian and has four kids while Mathieu has a mixed race family with two kids. The illustration styles are different but not vastly so. The older book claims that Dr. Seuss is Theo LeSieg's mentor, while the newer explains that when Theodore Geisel illustrated his own books, he used the name Dr. Seuss, and when someone else illustrated them he used Theo LeSieg -- LaSieg being Geisel backwards. How beautifully Seussian!

Besides Seuss's wonderful off the wall humor, we enjoy the illustrations as well.

I don't have much to say about this book because it was just a small read and I was just waiting to get my braces so I figured to read one of Dr. Seuss' old books that made when he was under the name Theo LeSeig. I know that fact from the TV special : In Search of Dr. Seuss. I can definitely say that Seuss' illustrations still look similar to the cartoons of Seuss that we know today but still feel like a traditional cartoonist drawing. It's a nice quick-read to introduce children to teeth via book and I recommend any orthodontist or dentist to have these in their waiting room. For the little kids.

Everybody has teeth! Well, except for clams and snails and some birds. Teeth are super helpful, they let you chew, talk, play the Trombone, and even do trapeze stunts. Without your teeth you'll be sad. One day your teeth will fall out, and you'll get a new set. Set 2 doesn't fall out, so you've got to take care of them.

Okay, it may just be me. The illustrations in this book creeped me out a little bit. It's probably the focus on the teeth. It doesn't seem to have that Dr. Seuss charm to the drawings. The words were fine, but I could NOT get over the drawings.

It's such a shame that I didn't care for the drawings. If I liked them, maybe I would have it in my classroom to teach about teeth. I think I would have to choose a different book for that.

Along with  The Ear Book,  The Foot Book, and from what I guess,  The Eye Book, this is just a book of rhymes about teeth. It touches on the purpose of teeth (eating, speech, and smiling for pictures, haha), and the dos and don'ts for maintenance (which is kind of cool, if you ask me). My 10 month old daughter is OBSESSED with these books.

This would be an excellent book for first grade students because that is about the time when many of them start losing their teeth. You could read this book to your class and then talk about all of the ways that teeth are important. What types of animals have teeth? Which don't? Do any of them use their teeth differently than we do? There are many questions you could ask in order to facilitate discussion.

This is a fun and informational book for kids! It tells them why they have teeth, other people who have teeth, the different types of animals that have teeth, and what is the difference between big kids and little kids teeth. It is fun to read a book that is dedicated entirely to teeth!

This book isn't your typical Dr. Seuss book because it was illustrated by Joe Mathieu, however it still has the typical Dr. Seuss style with its rhyming words on each page! Every reader big or small, short or tall will fall in love with this book demonstrating the different size teeth we all have.

This book is interesting because it invites kids to look around at things in their own lives. After reading this book or during, kids will almost always ask to see my teeth and compare them to their own. This gets them thinking about how people are different and the same.

Who doesn’t love Dr. Suess? This one was written under Theo LeSieg which was a different pseudonym Ted Geisel used for books he didn’t illustrate himself. Joe Mathieu is the illustrator. Not to be harsh on his work, but the pictures are my least favorite part. I find them to be a little on the creepy side due to the exaggerated mouths & teeth, but it’s for kids. Of course, it’s okay to be silly! "The Tooth Book" is special to me and my baby, because my aunt (and Luke’s great-aunt) got it for my baby shower. She picked it out especially because she’s a hygienist and my father is a dentist. So you could say teeth are kinda important to my family!
Obviously, I LOVE my dentist, but I know a lot of people have anxiety going to their appointments. Are you afraid of the dentist?
Books can help us deal with our fears. What other books helped you overcome those negative emotions? (Ooo, this question can go deep!)
