Summary:
The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss is about a magical talking cat who causes mischief in the lives of a young girl named Sally and her brother. Sally and her brother are sad because they are stuck inside their house on a rainy day. To make their day brighter, the cat randomly shows up unannounced and even brings along his friends Thing 1 and Thing 2. Unfortunately, the cat is somewhat of a troublemaker and makes many messes in the house. The children start to freak out because they are scared of how their mother will react to the disarray the cat created. Luckily, the cat finds a way to clean up right before their mother returns. At the end of this story, the children debate whether or not to confess to their mother everything that happened during her absence.
This book is a great picture book for a kindergarten reading lesson. By reading this book aloud, kindergarteners learn how to decipher the central message of a story. They think about the different characters and how those characters’ decisions affect what happens next in the story. This book is also a great resource to use when introducing kindergarteners to rhyming words.
