I was surpised with this delightful book as a gift from my kindergarten teacher at graduation. It hit home with the title since with her, my kindergarten teacher I had only started out and now I was on my way. I am in college now and this book is a lifeline when things start looking rough. It is very quirky and fun but holds powerful messages we all need to hear every now and again.
Fantastic book for kids! So imaginative and creative. Easy read that children will find delightful!
Dr. Seuss is always brilliant! His stories and rhymes are fun and entertaining! Some of my all time favorites!! Such a great way to entertain children and get them interested in reading!
Title: Seuss-isms Author:Theodor Seuss Geisel Illustrator: Bryan Collier Genre:Poetry Theme(s): Words of Advice Opening line/sentence: Be True to Yourself- You have brains in your head. Brief Book Summary: This book of Dr. Seuss poetry is in the normal Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme but all of the poems are words of wisdom or advice. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Dozens of advice nuggets ("Think Before You Speak," "Tell the Truth," etc.) are reinforced with lines and images from Dr. Seuss books (e.g., "A person's a person, no matter how small," from Horton Hears a Who!, illustrates "Never Underestimate the Power of One"). The doctor gives great advice, although this time it's aimed at those older than his typical reader. Professional Recommendation/Review #2: With a whimsical drawing of the Cat in the Hat s hat and child-like lettering on the cover, this small-format book appears to appeal to young readers. It is published by the Children s Books division of Random House, after all, and the contents consist of illustrations from books by Dr. Seuss, accompanied by one or two stanza-long quotations from various of his books. In her introduction, however, Audrey Geisel, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, reveals the book s purpose: to offer advice for living. Despite appearances, this didactic collection of Seuss snippets, packaged as a Gift Edition, is not child-friendly. The material is arranged according to such sub-heads as On adversity and On aging, topics that are not intrinsically interesting to children. On life s mysteries contains the advice Cause you never can tell/What goes on down below!/This pool might be bigger/Than you or I know! Nostalgic adults might find this prescription amusing. Most children, however, would be baffled or insulted to receive this volume as a gift. 1997, Random House Children s Books, $7.99. Ages adult. (PUBLISHER: Random House (New York:), PUBLISHED: c1997.) Response to Two Professional Reviews: I do not believe that there is an age minimum or limit for reading this book. Yes, younger readers will need help analyzing the words to find the meaning but that is the magic of poetry. Everyone can interpret it in a different way and all of those ways are meaningful. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The illustrations in the the book take up a full spread which invites the reader right into the page. The font although is small, is written in a Times New Roman to make it easy to read. Consideration of Instructional Application: I would read a poem to my class everyday. I would write it on the board and give my students a chance to draw, write, record themselves if we have ipad technology to express how
I receieved this as a cute little work gift and I was shook at the first excerpt lol
I think it's a nice walk down memory lane seeing all of the Seuss books I grew up with referenced here in small passages. It's like an enlightening highlight reel.
Dr. Seuss is one of those children's authors that can truly speak to anyone of any age and this is a pretty enjoyable book.
This collection of small excerpts from Dr. Seuss's book, highlighting different words of wisdom of different everyday topics, has been put together by Dr. Seuss's wife. Dr. Seuss had such a unique way of talking through his books to people about common everyday topics, such as diversity, love, growing up and success. I loved this book and the truth behind it. A book that is short, but teaches so much to the reader about life, which is what Dr. Seuss was so famous for. A book that can be read over and over again and you will learn something new each time you read it. For children of all ages.
Dr Seuss is a genius and this small book is full of wisdom that will almost certainly help everyone live a better life. That is “99 and three quarter percent guaranteed.”
This short collection of gems from Seuss’ body of work shows his wisdom and foresight. Now I plan to go back and reread some his books from which the quotes were taken. A fun read.
