Dr Seuss serving knowledge!

This is a great, colorful and unique story. Dr. Seuss's illustrations are large and lively. This story is about an elephant named Horton who stumbles across a tiny spec on a leaf, this tiny spec wasn't just dirt, it was the town of Whoville. The Who's were watching as their lives were in danger. Horton spends his days trying to save their little spec, but nothing is going right. Horton tries to convince other animals that then town of Whoville is in danger but they don't believe him. One day they get so frustrated with Horton's lies that they tie him up, Horton begs the townspeople to make as much noise as they can so the animals don't destroy them. After shouting as loud as they could, the other animals finally hear them and begin to help Horton save the Who's.

After reading Horton Hatches the Egg I came to an understanding that you need to read the sequel right afterwards which made the whole story better. This book can be a standalone but I believe if you read the first book then you get a huge understanding of who Horton is and why he is loyal and persistent. I cannot say which one is better but I believe when it comes this book Dr. Seuss was more creative and found his flow of creativity.

In the sequel, Horton's baby is apparently nonexistent at all (probably roaming the jungle) and he decides to go take a bath in the river. While he is accomplishing that, Horton hears a noise but cannot detect where it is coming from until he realizes that it is a speck of dust. Even though its difficult to see whats inside a speck of dust, he learns that theres a whole country inside it and is greeted by a Who, who is the Mayor of Whoville. He tells Horton that he is grateful for rescuing them from falling into the river and begs Horton to find a safe place from harm.

While Horton enjoys the company, everyone else in the forest think that Horton is nuts and one of the Kangaroos decides to take matter into her own hands and try to ruin Horton and the speck of dust. So now its up to the citizens of Whoville to help prevent them from dying.

I saw the film version in pieces and I enjoyed it but since I've already read this book as a kid, seen the cartoon version on CBS, and parts of the film I do not feel like rewatching but I believe the message behind this book is crucial. Dr. Seuss wrote this book after his travels of Japan where he made the revelation of the current state Japan was after the Nuclear Bomb and WW2. He was prejudiced towards the Japanese before and after the war until his visit where he decided to dedicate this book to his friend. The main message that Horton keeps repeating n

is so universal in our society. We always need to stick up for those who don't have a voice regardless of religion, sexual orientation, color, gender, politics because if we don't help those smaller than us than when the time comes that we need saving their won't be a voice to lend us a hand. We need to help make this world a better place and by accepting each other's differences and treat each other with respect then we are one step closer towards finding peace.

P.S. If you want to read more about the city of Who-ville, you should check out How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Better than any book I have read on communication...simple yet profound lesson. So often we go through life not paying attention to the 'little' things; it is only when those things become 'big' things that we notice what we should have been paying attention to all along. This book gets that message across in a very clever way that children will understand.

Horton hears A Who! is one of my favorite books and movies! Similar to How The Grinch Stole Christmas this movie takes place in a forest but what Horton hears is on a small spectacle of dusk (Whoville on a snowflake- they are both small) Horton is convinced there is something or someone on the dust. I think this book teaches about simple things and paying attention to what is surrounding you. It also teaches students to stand up for people especially ones who can not for themselves. I loved all the pictures and rhymes throughout the book. This book would be perfect in the classroom because behind the story line it shows an anti-prejudice movement. Meaning that no matter what size or ethnicity or any other everyone should be treated how you would want to be treated.

" I'll just have to save him. Because after all, a person's a person, no matter how small."

" Please don't harm all my little folks, who have as much right to live as us bigger folks do!"

Horton, if everyone thinks like you, this world will be a different ball park to hit home runs at.

Horton Hears a Who is a classic children's book about what it takes to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves and provide support to communities in need. Horton the elephant discovers a whole community existing within a speck of dust and while he tells everyone about these little people no one believes him. I would use this book as an introductory text to a unit about advocacy and what it takes for an individual to go against the majority and stand up for marginalized communities. This would be a great text to use to introduce "Somebody Wanted But So Then" charts and summary sentences for certain characters within the text. Horton has a very different want than the community he lives within, but it is similar to the whats of the community within the speck.
