Great illustrations and great plot. In this story, Bartholomew Cubbins gets into quite a quandary when he takes off his hat to honor the King who is passing by and ends up having a hat somehow materialize atop his head. Naturally, the King is not amused by Bartholomew's apparent disrespect. Fortunately, 499 hats later, Bartholomew's head is finally bare. Love this Dr. Seuss story!

"Be calm, my Sire, and have to no fears.  The hat will come off in ten short years."

Not Typical Dr. Seuss

None of the adults know what to do, and Bartholomew makes important people very perplexed.  Bartholomew stays calm through the whole story, in full control of his emotions, and does everything the king tells him to do.  There is a storyline within this story because of bratty Grand Duke Wilfred who keeps wanting to push Bartholomew off the top of the castle.  At the end of the story, the prince ends up being spanked on a castle turret, much to the delight of children.  Bartholomew ends up with no hat on his head, unscathed, and with a reward, he takes home to his parents.

I cried reading this book, how could I not, the birds of a feather are not a bust or a flock; she hits at the loam, or jumps over brooms she fits with her parents to clean up her room; the gentle prine on her mouth or film on her teeth, spell massacre massacre massacre to only smallness and script on her bosom a one hundred and three, until every fanatic was looking for moon beams, in her eyes over thigh peared stare, under chairs where the glares were looking for god, she had such redemption, do you happen to know why? - Dr.Hari Krsna

This is one of my mom's VERY favorite Dr. Seuss titles. I loved it as a kid, too, and I still love it now. The comment about how it was the same view but backward is a brilliant concept for kids still learning about alternate perspectives...and maybe just as good for us adults who need to learn to see things through the eyes of others...

Creative, magical story, and the touch of red in the illustrations is fantastic. This really is a literary masterpiece, in my opinion.

And I totally need to start using "Screebees!" as an exclamation of surprise! :D

I simply ADORE this book. Bartholomew just can't seem to catch a break! He takes his hat off in the presence of the king only to be taken to the castle for not doing so. What is up with that? Could it possibly be the fact that he just can't take off his hat? OR is it because one keeps appearing underneath every one he takes off. The hats are so pretty and they keep getting more & more eye-catching. One of my favorite Dr. Seuss books ever!!! =)

At first when I saw this Dr Seuss book WASN'T a rhyming book I thought that I wasn't going to like it, but it is a funny little story. A power-mad King who demands a boy takes he hat off when in the presence of a powerful man as he, the problem is taking of your hat is not as easy as you'd think it would be. The illustrations are very nice too, all shades of black and grey with the bright red hat standing out. One of Dr Seuss's more interesting and less insane books.

Charming little story, although not one of Seuss's better loved nor well known books. The idea of trying to take off a hat, but another one pops up in its place didn't seem to have any direct analogies to me... like The Lorax, for example. Instead, it was just a story with wild and crazy characters, and a boy named Bartholomew who is just trying to remove his hat but can't.

No rhymes here, just prose and a few fun Seussian proper names. It's worth a read... but will appeal to older children moreso, or whenever your kids need something more challenging than Cat in the Hat.

The 500 hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
The story of Bartholomew Cubbins is by Dr. Seuss. It is about a little boy named Bartholomew who went to the market one day to sell berries but was arrested by the king for not taking off his hat before him. Bartholomew was confused as he had taken off his hat when the king was passing by. However, he soon realized that hats were appearing on his head. The king and his nephew tried all they could to remove the hats but they could not succeed. Finally, after 500 hats, Bartholomew’s head became bare and the last hat was so beautiful that the king gave him a lot of money to buy the hat. Bartholomew went home happy. I did not understand the story or the moral of the story.

An interesting story without the regular rhyming of Dr. Seuss's other stories.
