All i've read this past week is children's books and I'm not even mad about it

I don't remember ever reading Dr. Suess (I'm sure I did, only it was SO long ago), so this just put me in such good spirits! I remember how giddy these made me feel, and the rhyming is just so whimsical, no books can compare to these. I'm collecting all of Dr. Suess's work and this was just such a classic, great place to start. I love the art and the story combined!

3.5 stars. My favorite Dr. Seuss book as a kid. I was very happy to be able to read this out loud with my five year old daughter and have her love it as much as I did.

‘Dr Seuss’ being the pen name under which Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote (taking his middle name and making full use of his Oxford University PhD in English literature) was the American born grandson of German immigrants to the US.

Beginning his career in the late 1920’s as an illustrator and cartoonist, it wasn’t until nearly 30 years later that Seuss produced his classic series of children’s books that so many of us know and love.

Never having the benefit of the books of Dr Seuss when I was a child, it was with great pleasure that I discovered his work many years later when reading them to my own children.

For anyone who has not yet discovered Seuss’s classic children’s books – now is the time to do so! What Seuss has created using such imagination, with a particularly dynamic (both flamboyant but simple) and unique style of illustration, coupled with his verse rhythms and the use of repetitive but building and twisting phrases – all in an extremely and deliberately accessible way, is a series of works which are a fantastic visual and verbal feast, captivating both children and adults alike.

For me the most memorable examples of Seuss’s work are:
‘The Cat in the Hat’ (along with its sequel ‘The Cat in the Hat Comes Back’) – For the wonderful creation of mischief that is the ‘Cat in the Hat’
‘Fox in Socks’ – For the tremendously bizarre tongue-twisters
‘Green Eggs and Ham’ – For the ever building and dynamic nature of the verse.
All of them of course have Seuss’s trademark fantastic illustrations and rhythmic verses throughout.

It is that unique combination of:
Attractive illustrations and exciting verse – both very dynamic, always moving always going somewhere new; both very strange, silly and bizarre – all in an extremely accessible, engaging and compelling (and let’s not forget educational) way – which creates Dr Seuss’s fantastically immersive world.

A timeless world of the imagination, of amazing words, pictures, rhymes, stories, learning, but above all else – FUN

Not just for children, but for the child in all of us.

As a kid this book always made me anxious. The house gets completely messed up, the cat is emotionally manipulative, and the moral of the story seems to be that it's okay for people to do crazy shit to you (and ignore your repeated pleas for them to stop) so long as they eventually knock it off and clean up the mess. After all, it was all in the spirit of good fun, right?

Even as an adult, I find this book a dark and uncomfortable read. The children are smiling in the end (and I think Seuss himself saw the conflict as having been resolved) but the cat never apologizes for his disrespectful acts. To the contrary, he attempts to guilt the children and fish into feeling sorry for scolding him. He cleans up, sure, but he does not acknowledge that he has done something wrong. It's like an abuser who takes you out for ice cream and wants you to let bygones be bygones.

Oh, you weren't having a good time? What a prude you are! I was only having fun with you... how could you insinuate I'm that way?

*shudder*

Kellelele see lugu tuttav on, see rõõmustab kindlasti kuuldes, et Leelo Märjamaa tõlge on absoluutselt täiesti fantastiline ja ta on väärt kõiki tõlkepreemiaid, mis ta on saanud või veel saab. Olen kümnete aastate jooksul selle raamatu korduvalt kätte võtnud ja nuputanud, kuidas neid nutikaid riime eesti keelde panna saaks ja no... ei. Aga nüüd on see tehtud ja väga kenasti. No näiteks:
Ka kalake kukkus
nüüd teekannu plörts!
"Kas meeldib see mulle?
No mitte üks törts!"
Lugesin ette nii oma kolmeaastastele tööl, kui ka kolmeteistaastasele kodus ja... kõigile meeldis.

I actually had a blast with this book!

No child should grow up without a bit of Dr. Seuss's magic.

I never really read anything by Dr Seuss when I was younger (only recently I read Grinch). And I just remember how I've always seen his books being mention in YA and wondered what's that about.

And I still don't know why only two of his books were translated into Czech (if I can trust Czech version of Goodreads).

Anyway, this was quite fun and quick read. But the important question is if anyone ever did a horror version of The Cat in the Hat because it's just asking for it, isn't it?

At the end you need to support & love your childish... I'm proud of my childish soul ♥️

Great rhymes, great story. Still one of the best for kids.

دسامبر ماه خوندن کتاب کودک برای چالش گودریدزه و قراره همگی زخمی کنیم و زخمی بشیم. گرچه من خیلی وقته تمومش کردم و نیاز ندارم ولی اول اینکه کتاب کودک خیلی بیشتر از این حرفاس که فقط برای یه عدد خوند (چه حرف کلیشه‌ای). و اینکه یه دوستی دنبال فایل این کتاب می‌گشت و براش فرستادم و خودمم دیدم از کتابای معروف و کلاسیکه، خوندمش

توی یه روز سرد و بارونی که هیچ کاری برای انجام دادن نیست، خواهر و برادر داستان نشستن تو خونه و هیچ کاری نمی‌کنن جز نشستن و نگاه کردن به بیرون از پنجره به امید اینکه یه روزِ خوبِ آفتابی بیاد
مامانشون هم رفته بیرون. توی همین گیر و دار یه گربه‌ی دلقک، آوازخون میاد تو خونه تا سرگرمشون کنه که اوضاع خوب پیش نمی‌ره

تخیلات بدبینانه‌ی آدم می‌تونه به همین عجیب غریبی باشه. تو افکار خودت غرق می‌شی و بدترین سناریوها رو تصور می‌کنی ولی دست خودت نیست. بعد به خودت میای که از خیالاتت اومدی بیرون و خودتو سرزنش می‌کنی که این چه فکرای خزعبلی بودن و می‌بینی همه چی امن و امانه
گرچه تو داستان معلوم نیست گربه‌هه واقعیه یا فقط تخیل بچه‌ها، ولی اون افکار و تخیلات رو خوب می‌فهمم
جدی دسته کمی از اینکه فکر کنی یه گربه‌ی دلقک آوازخون میاد و خونه زندگیتو بهم می‌ریزه ندارن :))
