The only thing I love more than reading bedtime stories to my cousin is reading Dr. Seuss bedtime stories to my cousin, who literally can't stop talking about how the bird is carrying the birthday cake on the cover :)

This Dr. Seuss book is all about birthdays in a place called Katroo. In Katroo, there is a birthday bird that comes on your birthday to treat you to an exciting day full of whatever your heart desires! First, you eat whatever you want on a Smorgasbord's back, and then you go to the Official Katroo Birthday Sounding-Off Place, where you scream to the world that you are you. The birthday bird makes it clear that if you were not you, you would be something else, or nothing at all, and that you should be thankful that you are who you are. After that, you go by boat (pulled by Funicular Goats) to the Birthday Flower Jungle, where you can choose any flowers you want to have delivered to your house. For lunch you have hot dogs from a spool. After lunch, you take a dip in the Mustard-Off Pools to clean yourself off. As a present, the bird gives you any pet you'd like from the Official Katroo Birthday Pet Reservation and a Time Telling Fish. Lastly, you get to go to the Birthday Pal-alace where there are games, singing fish, cakes, bands, fireworks, and hamburger stands, and all of your friends are invited. At the end of the night, the birthday bird takes you back to your bedroom, and tells the reader that he wishes he could do the same things for the reader's birthday.
This book would be great to use in younger classrooms (probably K-4th or 5th grade) for birthdays, or early in the year when, as a teacher, you are asking for everyone's birthdays. You could use the book to ask students what they would like, or what they would do differently, and ask what they did for their birthdays last year. You could also pay attention to the rhyme schemes and poetic forms throughout the story.
