This graphic novel is visual interpretation of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Metamorphosis is a story about the transformation of a traveling salesman into a gross, monstrous and repelling insect. It is also a story of metamorphosis of the attitude of the family when the bread-winner turns into an invalid.

It is no easy task writing graphic novel based on one of the most famous stories of Franz Kafka. Peter Kuper has managed to create vivid, effective and engaging visual interpretation of "Metamorphosis" while still retaining the gore, shock and kafkaesque cynicism of the original story.

The story also reminds me of a story in Indian mythology about a ruthless robber who is once asked by a sage why he does what he does. When he says he does it for his family, the sage asks him to go and ask his family whether they will take responsibility of his actions in afterlife. To his shock, his family refuses the responsibility for his actions. From then onwards, he leaves his shady profession and eventually ends up writing the famous epic The Ramayana of Valmiki. Although lacking the tragic, fatalistic and hopeless end, the story tells the same futility of selfless attachment anything and anyone.
