While the book starts out a little slow and continues along at an ambling pace, it's well worth the read for its subtle messages about fascism, courage and human dignity.
Absolutely brilliant writing! The humor is delicately managed and interwoven with the horrors of WWI Nazi agenda and inhumanity, yet gives the reader insight into the mind of a Nazi leader attempts a "new way" of dealing with local Italians.
Brilliant character work. You will be feel like a co-conspirator in all the best ways. This book should not get lost to history. It's a masterwork in storytelling!
This was one of my favorite books when it was first published, and it remains so today. The characters are timeless, the book is so alive! The whole world should read this book!
Italians are a happy people. If you go to Italy, get a house among the people, do not go to a hotel. By living among Italians you will come to know them and realize the joy they have for life. They are a happy people.
A fairly interesting book about how WWII came to a small village in the remote hill country of Italy. Simple village folks are not nearly so simple as they seem while evil Nazi Germans are not quite so invincible as they would wish.
Absolutely wonderful, one of the best novels I’ve read.
This is a beautifully written story that is funny, moving and horrifying in turn. The characters are painted to perfection and it is told in a style that completely embraces the reader.
