Update after my February 2020 Re-read

A lot has happened in the world since I read this in high school in the mid-1990s. The book is as interesting and powerful as I remember. However, I think having an adult perspective on life, government, laws, taxes, rights, etc. makes this a much more powerful for me now than it was when I was a teenager.

One of the great things about this book, too, is that it is not very long. I think that morality tales with political undertones can be daunting if you know you are dealing with a 300-page book. This tells a strong tale in 125 pages or so that is easy to read but difficult to swallow. An allegory that is a must read for all!

I will also say that this book has an ending that I remember as being “wow, but not super shocking” as a teenager. Now, it is absolutely terrifying – it gave me chills!

One of the best - no doubt! So much symbolism and meaning crammed into such a small book. Also, a great use of anthropomorphism (I just wanted to use a big, fancy sounding word!)

Review wise, that is about all I need to say - it is great, read it!

But, I will add this anecdote . . .

I read this when I was in High School as required reading. Most required reading books were long and not all that exciting (I am looking at you, Jane Eyre!) But, this one was so good that I couldn't put it down. And, since it is so short, I read it in one night. Well, the teacher had assigned chapters and asked us not to read ahead. Still hard to believe I got in trouble for reading too much of a required reading book!

“Animal Farm” by George Orwell was published in 1945. Somehow, I escaped reading this in high school. It’s a freebee with audible audio. I needed a 3+ hour entertaining listen for a day trip, so I chose this freebee.

The audio narrator, Ralph Cosham, has the perfect voice. His voice is that of the time-period, adding to the feel of the story. For those who, like me, dodged this high school classic, it’s a satire on the Russian Revolution. The animals live on Mr. Jones Manor Farm, and it’s a group of pigs who motivate the farm animals to revolt and take the farm, make it into the Animal Farm.

I had to cheat to see who the pigs represent. There is Old Major, Napoleon, Squealer, and Snowball. Their rally cry: 4 legs are good, 2 legs are bad (although it was an amended that some animals are more equal than others).

Orwell’s main message is that total power corrupts, even when idealism is at play.

It was a fun 3 hour listen.

-A cute little story about some farm animals. Wait, I think that’s where Orwell got the idea for the title. Neat! Nothing else to see here!

-True Animalism has never been tried. I would have done a better job implementing its policies. If Napoleon can become human, I can become pig and institute farmstead utopia.

-I Sta(li)n Napoleon.

-Definitely don’t watch The Death of Stalin. It is definitely not the best, most caustic satire of Communist rule since Animal Farm which, again, is just a silly story about some farm animals.

-Consider yourself reeducated.

إذا أكملت قراءة الرواية احذر، لا ترفع رأسك عاليًا لتنظر، لأنّك إن نظرت اكتشفت، وإذا اكتشفت فهمت، وإذا فهمت سجنت أو كمّمت أو رضيت، وإذا رضيت اقتنيت أو سكت، فإذا سكت فاجلس ساكنا قرب أبواب الصّمت، وأمّا إذا اقتنيت فالطبلة سعرها رخيص وفي المتناول، فاقتنها واجلس لتطبّل، ولا تخجل وإيّاك أن تستحي، ففن التطبيل فنٌ عريق عراقة الإستبداد والطغيان، والتّطبيل أشكال وألوان، فاختر لونك بإمعان.

وأنت تقرأ هذه الرواية ذات الأحداث المتخيلة، ستقرأ جملا تعرفها، فتنبثق أمامك معان تعرفها، وكيف لا تعرفها وأنت تعيشها ( تغيير دستور، خلق قوانين جديدة، استبداد وطغيان، تزييف للتاريخ وتغيير للحقائق، جمل متكررة ومهترئة لتنويم الجماهير، تخوين البعض وتأليه للبعض الآخر ) فيتسرب الشكّ إلى عقلك .. أأنا أقرأ الرواية ؟ أم أعيش الرواية ؟ هل أنا هنا أم هناك ؟ أم إنّ هنا وهناك متشابهان أو ربّما متطابقان ؟
فتدرك أن ما كتب في الماضي ليس بالضرورة متعلقا بأحداث الماضي، وأنّ الأساس في الرواية هو فكرة تحويل الثورة من وسيلة نحو الحريّة والتّحرر إلى أداة قمع واستبداد، وهذا أمر يحدث في العالم كلّه مهما اختلف الزمان، ونحن العرب نعرفه حقّ المعرفة.

وكان أثنى عشر صوتا يصرخ في غضب، وكلها متشابهة. لا حاجة للسؤال الآن، عمّا قد يحدث لوجوه الخنازير. وتتطلع الكائنات في الخارج إليهم من خنزير إلى إنسان، ومن إنسان إلى خنزير، ثم من خنزير إلى إنسان، ولكن أصبح من المستحيل القول من هو الإنسان ومن هو الخنزير. نعم يصبح التّفريق بين الخنزير والإنسان أمرا صعبا يصل إلى حد إستحالة فعل ذلك، فالإنسان كائن مكرم ولكن تصرفاته اتجاه أخيه الإنسان قد تضعه في مرتبة أدنى من الحيوان.

هل مصير كلّ ثورة هو الزوال والإندثار ؟
لقد لخّص لنا الكاتب فكرة الثورة .. وضع سيء يدفع نحو التّمرد، التمرد تتبعه ثورة، الثورة في بدايتها استجابة طبيعية دون حسابات شخصية، مع وصول الثورة أو اقترابها من النهاية يظهر على السطح أشخاص رأوا وشاهدوا إمكانية النّجاح فاستغلوا ذلك ليقودوا الثّورة وهي في رمقها الأخير، فيزيفوا ويغيروا ويخدعوا ويمكروا، وفي النّهاية يمسكون بزمام الأمور ليقودوا الآخرين نحو أوضاع قد تكون أسوأ من الوضع الذي ثاروا عليه. فتدفن الآمال والأحلام تحت تراكمات الكذب والتزييف، وتحكم الشعارات، وتغتال الطموحات.

الرواية تقرأ وربما تقرأ مرة ثانية، مليئة بالرمزية نعم، قد تبدوا للبعض طفولية نوعا ما، ولكن تستحقّ القراءة بكل تأكيد. أمّا المراجعة فلا تستحقّ القراءة بكل تأكيد فهذا النوع من الروايات لا يستحق مراجعات بل قراءات وتأملات.

Under the leadership of the pigs, the animals of Manor Farm overthrow their human owner and go into business for themselves with all animals doing their part. However, some parts involve a lot less work than others and things quickly change...

I somehow managed to dodge this landmine in high school and the ensuing couple decades. However, I had a few conversations about it at work and decided it was time to give it a read.

Animal Farm is a dystopian tale of revolution and the ensuing government. According to everyone, it's an allegory of the Russian revolution of 1917. However, it could easily be an allegory of every revolution ever. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

The revolution happens fairly quickly. The pigs organize the other animals and send farmer Jones out on his ass. After that, the future looks bright for about fifteen minutes. Then the pigs start maneuvering against each other and fucking over the other animals. There's also scapegoating, lying, rewriting history, and all sorts of things no government today does. That was sarcasm, before anyone decides to chime in.

This is a powerful little book with many messages. Power corrupts. Communism doesn't work. Those who don't know the past are doomed to repeat it. People are dicks.

There are some classics that are as dry as a geriatric's vagina and pretty joyless to read. Other classics are fairly easy reads containing a wealth of wisdom. Animal Farm is firmly in the second camp. In today's uncertain political climate, it is definitely a must read, although it may be a case of closing the barn door after the horse has already left. Five out of five stars.

Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945.

According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union.

Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War.

The Soviet Union, he believed, had become a brutal dictatorship, built upon a cult of personality and enforced by a reign of terror.

Old Major, the old boar on the Manor Farm, summons the animals on the farm together for a meeting, during which he refers to humans as "enemies" and teaches the animals a revolutionary song called "Beasts of England".

When Major dies, two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume command and consider it a duty to prepare for the Rebellion. The animals revolt and drive the drunken and irresponsible farmer Mr. Jones from the farm, renaming it "Animal Farm".

They adopt the Seven Commandments of Animalism, the most important of which is, "All animals are equal."

Snowball teaches the animals to read and write, while Napoleon educates young puppies on the principles of Animalism. Food is plentiful, and the farm runs smoothly.

The pigs elevate themselves to positions of leadership and set aside special food items, ostensibly for their personal health.

Some time later, several men attack Animal Farm.

Jones and his men are making an attempt to recapture the farm, aided by several other farmers who are terrified of similar animal revolts. Snowball and the animals, who are hiding in ambush, defeat the men by launching a surprise attack as soon as they enter the farmyard. Snowball's popularity soars, and this event is proclaimed "The Battle of the Cowshed".

It is celebrated annually with the firing of a gun, on the anniversary of the Revolution. Napoleon and Snowball vie for pre-eminence. When Snowball announces his plans to modernize the farm by building a windmill, Napoleon has his dogs chase Snowball away and declares himself leader. ...

پس از آن انقلاب حیوانی، خوکها (که از هوش بالاتری نسبت به سایر حیوانات برخوردار هستند) نقش رهبری حیوانات مزرعه را، به دست می‌گیرند؛ اما پس از چندی در بین خود حیوانات، یک سری توطئه، و کودتا انجام می‌گیرد؛ «ناپلئون» که یکی از دو خوک پرنفوذ مزرعه است، با استفاده از سگ‌های درنده‌ ای که مخفیانه تربیت کرده؛ «سنوبال»، دیگر خوک پرنفوذ مزرعه را، فراری داده، و خود رهبر بلامنازع مزرعه می‌شود؛ پس از آن، «سنوبال» عامل «جونز» معرفی شده، و تمام رویدادهای بد، و خرابکاری‌هایی که در مزرعه صورت می‌گیرد، به وی یا عوامل او، در داخل مزرعه نسبت داده می‌شود؛ و به فرمان «ناپلئون» بسیاری از حیوانات، به جرم همکاری با «سنوبال»، توسط سگ‌ها اعدام می‌شوند

در ادامه ی داستان خوک‌ها به‌ تدریج همه ی قوانین حیوانات را زیر پا می‌گذارند؛ قانون اساسی حیوانات معروف به «هفت فرمان» به تدریج محو و تحریف می‌شود، خواندن سرود قدغن، و حیوانات با غذای روزانه ی کم، مجبور به کار بسیار می‌شوند؛ در حالیکه خوک‌ها فرمانروایی می‌کنند، و غذای زیادی می‌خورند؛ و از تمام امکانات رفاهی سود می‌برند؛ و حتی یاد می‌گیرند که چطور روی دوپا راه بروند، و با انسان‌ها معامله کنند

از جمله برنامه‌ های «ناپلئون»، ساخت «آسیاب بادی» است، که گویا برای بهبود کیفیت زندگی حیوانات ساخته میشود؛ نقشه ی نخستین آسیاب، توسط «سنوبال» طرح‌ریزی شده بود، و در ابتدا «ناپلئون» به مخالفت با آن برمی‌خیزد، ولی با بیرون راندن «سنوبال»، ایده ی ساخت آن را پی می‌گیرد، اما به دلیل بی کفایتی «ناپلئون»، ساخت آن به شکل مطلوبی پیش نمی‌رود

در پایان، ساخته شدن آسیاب، که با فداکاری‌ها و زجر و تحمل فراوان حیوانات مزرعه، امکان‌پذیر گردیده، نه تنها به بهبود وضعیت زندگی حیوانات منجر نمی‌شود، که خود به آسبابی برای بهره‌ کشی بیشتر از حیوانات بدل می‌گردد و ...؛

استمتعت بقرائتها منذ عشرة سنوات! استمتعت بقرائتها منذ ثلاث سنوات! واستمتعت بقرائتها منذ شهرين! القصة أصبحت جزءا من خلايا دماغي. لا أنساها إلا لأتذكرها عندما أمر في حياتي بموقف يذكرني بها. وما أكثرها من مواقف!

إذا قرأت "مزرعة الحيوانات" ولم تعلم أن كاتبها إنجليزي لربما ظننت أنه عربي الأصل! وإذا قرأتها وأنت لا تعلم أنها كُتِبت عام 1943 لربما حسبتها إصدارًا حديثًا!
بعد أن أنهيتها قرأت عنها بعض الدراسات النقدية من نقّاد مختلفي الجنسيات، وقد أجمعوا على أن تفرُّد أورويل يرجع إلى أنه كتب رواية تصلح لأي زمان ومكان.

كتبها أورويل تأثُرًا بالحرب العالمية الثانية، وكانت "المزرعة" هي الإتحاد السوفييتي، وكان لكل شخصية في الرواية من يقابلها في ذلك الوقت. ورغم ذلك عندما تقرأها ستجد في رمزيتها تقاربًا شديدًا مع واقعنا، وستقفز الشخصيات المقصودة إلى ذهنك سريعًا، وسيتكرر هذا أيًا كانت جنسيتك! التفسير الوحيد هو أن طبائع البشر واحدة في كل الأزمنة، وإن اختلفت الظروف، ومصائر الشعوب تكاد تتطابق عند قيام الثورات، سياسية أو اجتماعية، والسبب أن زعيم الثورة -أو مكتبه السياسي أو عصبته الحاكمة- يتحول تدريجيًا إلى نظام الحكم المطلق، وتحل طبقته محل الطبقة التي ثار الشعب ضدها من قبل، وإن كان يطالب بالحرية في البداية فسيقننها لاحقًا منعًا للفوضى، وإن كان يطالب بالعدالة في البداية فسيصدر قوانين تعسفية ولوائح جديدة بدعوى أن "الظروف تقتضي ذلك"!

عمومًا الإنترنت حافل بالدراسات المحترمة والممتعة عن تلك الرواية، لمن أراد التعمق في فهمها بعد قراءتها.

وبقى أن أشكر (عبد الحميد الكاتب) الذي قام بعرض تلك الرواية -وليس ترجمتها حرفيًا- بمهارة، وأرفق مقدمة وجيزة عن حياة أورويل، وتذييل رائع عنها ذاتها.

I read this in high school and hated it because it terrified me.

It's the perfect fable,it's a timeless classic.
When I think of my favourite books,Animal Farm is among the first to come to mind.

The cast of characters is memorable.There is the pig Napolean,the leader of the revolution,who turns into a despot,afterwards.That's Stalin. Then there is Snowball,another pig,who is co-leader of the revolution,but soon has to flee.He gets blamed for everything,that goes wrong.He is Trotsky,the Soviet dissident.

There is Benjamin,the wise,cynical donkey. There is Boxer,the workhorse,the true believer in the revolution. He is the hardest worker,and yet is deemed all too disposable,when he gets old. The dogs are the secret police,the apparatus of repression. Old Major,who dreams of the revolution,could be Karl Marx,or Lenin. And Animal Farm itself,could be an allegory for Russia,before the revolution.


Animal Farm is the ultimate critique of totalatarianism,a book which also serves as a warning against the dangers of violent revolution. And it's also a memorable description,of a dream turned sour.

A perfect book. People will still be reading this in a thousand years time, when communism is just a footnote.
