Featuring abortion, suicide, a homosexual kiss and some masochism this play about German teenagers first published in 1891 is frequently still controversial when staged. I suppose teenagers will be teenagers while audiences will be disturbed that children don't remain so.

What the hell did I just read??? This little play could be read in one sitting, which I consider a good thing. There were also a few delightfully weird nuggets of wisdom, although I hesitate to use that word. I can’t imagine this being performed, but I would go see it if given the opportunity, which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.

Spring Awakening is one of my favourite musicals of all time, so when I stumbled over the play, I had to buy it. It took me a year to read it though. And it was good. Very good. I would have liked it to be a bit longer, and with more character development, but then again, it was written in the late 1800's in Germany.

I seem to be the minority here but to me..this was absolute bullshit.

This play features a lot of controversial subjects, for any day and age. It gave a glimpse into German middle class in the late 1800s, from the perspective of teenagers, against the backdrop of blatant hypocricy of society (the parents). I now understand why Wedekind is considered as one of the pioneers in german expressionist theatre.

unerwartet unterhaltsam!

am Anfang macht ein boy vor seinem kumpel einen auf Doktor Sommer des 19. Jahrhunderts und eine Mutter verbietet ihrem Sohn Faust zu lesen, weil er dafür zu jung sei (he's 15 lol)

in der zweiten Hälfte however wirds dann auch inhaltlich spannend und boy gehts dann ab...das war safe die Grundlage für gossip girl so viel wie da gleichzeitig los war.

Das Ende ist bissi n Fiebertraum, es folgt ein Schlagabtausch zwischen Leben und Tod und am Ende bleibt die Erkenntnis, dass die Eltern der Grund allen Übels sind und teenager, aus welchem Jahrhundert auch immer, crazy Probleme haben, die kein/e Erwachsene/r je verstehen wird.
