A good book for the soul...

Written by an Episcopal who learned from Catholics, this is an eminently practical and contemporary how to guide on centering or contemplative prayer. The material on what is described as welcoming prayer was new to me, at least in the way it is presented, and a great enhancement for people who've been engaged in a practice for some time and looking for that next plateau-breaking step.

I read this book right after finishing Thomas Keating's Open Mind, Open Heart. The differences between the two was jarring. This book is challenging, with in depth psychological and historical discussion. There were times I felt like I had more questions than answers. But the final part of the book tied up the loose ends for me. The chapter on Welcoming Prayer helped me see Centering Prayer as part of the bigger picture. I'm glad my minister recommended the book to me.

Life changing book!

The practice of Centering Prayer is rooted in a long line of Christian tradition but represents a stark division from most meditational, self-focus practices.

In Centering Prayer the intention is the exclusive focus. Methodology is open and freeform.

On reading this book you will discover how natural and straightforward this practice can be and will hopefully enjoy it and find it a wonderful tool.

Very good book and full of information. Easy to read and contained a lot of background .
I learned how my faith can be strengthened by using Centering Prayer.

A very important book on the role and practice of self emptying as instrumental in transforming consciousness. Too rarely, it seems, is this kind of work found (or, at least, dealt with so clearly, powerfully, and in such a modern-relevant way) in the Christian tradition. I am inspired and empowered to deepen my practice of Centering Prayer as a means to find true spiritual freedom. I can also see myself facilitating book studies based on this book. A very worthwhile read!

Transformative!

I just reread this excellent introduction to centering prayer. Give me another decade of practicing this contemplative practice and maybe I'll fully appreciate Cynthia Bourgeault's insights.

Wonderfully insightful explanation of contemplative practice and centering prayer. The principles are applicable across belief systems and would enhance and expand anyone's spiritual practice. Highly recommend.
