This is the book that made me love Laurie Notaro! Her writing style is fabulous, her vignettes are hilarious, she looks at the world in a great way and she makes the reader want to write about his or her own mishaps. Can't wait to read more from Laurie Notaro!

I enjoy her writing style and the chapters are super short so it's easy to read where you get easily distracted and can pick it right where you left off (or re-read a couple pages). I will be reading her other books!

If I would have read this when it came out in 2003, I probably would have liked it a lot more, but I read it in 2010 because of the reviews and "stand up one-liners" don't pass the test of time. I found the younger days regarding dating before finding Mr. Right to be the funniest, but the book lost momentum and quickly went downhill after she got married. Two or Three stars because I could relate to Notaro's observation about men, children and mundane situations.

This book is a collection of her short stories about meeting her husband and living in her neighborhood etc. etc. The best story ever is the one where she tries to buy lawn fertilizer and it gets torn all over her car. I love it!!! You really have to like sarcastic humor - this isn't for the light-hearted - and don't read it at work because you WILL crack up laughing out loud, and if you try to explain what happened to anyone else you will look like a dork . . .

A decent amount of this book was humorous. I thought there would be more about being a bride than pre-engagement and post-wedding. I finished it, but wouldn't really recommend to others.

I was in the mood for a memoir and since I'm on my way to becoming a bride myself, I thought this would quench my thirst. It started off very strong and I was quite enthralled by younger Laurie's taste in men, as I have also been guilty of committing to that type of guy once or twice. You know, those beautiful artistic slacker types that sometimes have a cloud of smoke following them. But as she slipped into married life, I found my attention span waning.

I know that once you get married all the "partying" is over and most folks settle into the every day life of normalcy, but I just found that as she settled her writing style also lost some bite. This is something that doesn't have to happen just because you put on the ball and chain. I also found that as the married tales went on the stories really lacked a connection with one another and that bothered me.

However, this book earned three stars from me because Laurie Notaro narrates her pre and post wedding days with plenty of pizzazz and humor. How many ladies can successfully say they "stalked" a man into marriage? Especially when your fiance has to meet your slightly frightening mother. I also think the ending with Nancy Sinatra was a great way to end her story. It was both quite humorous and touching all at once!

I enjoyed this one more than the first one that I read (The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club...). I appreciate that there is a common theme running through this book versus the first one I read. This one is basically about growing up...

* meeting her boyfriend - while possibly having a booger hanging from her nose
* getting engaged - in the midst of a VD scare from an ex
* planning a wedding - while battling her mom for the rights to the decision making
* buying a home - and having her plumber use it as hide out when he should be fixing it up

There are several that I could relate to, several others that made me laugh out loud... MUCH better than the other book, but still doesn't make me want to run out and get any of her others.

This woman is hilarious! When I first picked it up, I assumed it would be chapter upon chapter of some chick ranting about trying on wedding dresses and then eating too much sample cake. The chapters were little stories in themselves, all laugh out loud funny, about being a newlywed who basically lives in her husband's sweatpants and is trying to manage her life in marital bliss.

I loved every single page. Yes, even the afterward with a picture of her in her wedding dress with the caption, "As her lucky spouse closes the deal by signing the marriage license, his new bride is not only taking that opportunity to dig a meatball particle out of her teeth with her tongue, but has also completely abandoned the effort of sucking her stomach in, never to return."

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there was no logical flow to the book. It kind-of read all over the place. It was hard to know when each chapter was taking place, like journal entries with no date. Other than that, a great read.

This was a quick read and overall an enjoyable one but I have a feeling I might like Notaro's other titles better. This one ... some of the stories just felt a little too contrived and the subject material too predictable.

The best of the lot (IMHO) is her venture to Home Depot to buy grass seed for her lawn. I was laughing out loud at her choice words ...

I read this one a few years ago. It was the first Laurie Notaro I read and I wasn't sure if my friend who recommended it was trying to tell me something or what...but it turned out to be an awesome book. Loved it.

I loved this one! Several times I was busting out laughing! Laurie sure is a train wreck! She rather reminds me of a female version of Ben Stiller, you know, always making these choices that you just know are going to turn out for the worst even with the best intentions!
