As typical with books of this genre, the story borders on the not believable. And the author is not is same league as Vince Flynn when it comes to writing. Having said it was an good not great quick read.

Found an author and spy thriller that I love, now I can enjoy the rest of the series. A page turner!

I thought this book was an improvement on the first, and the first was perfectly OK as a holiday read thriller. There is a little more humour from the Super Agent protagonist, and the tone, in spite of the subject matter, is lighter overall.
Much of the plot stretches credulity to breaking point, but that's pretty much what these books are for, right? I haven't read the third yet, but the addition of a 'woman of the book' already feels a bit formulaic, and the presence of the civilain heroine on a dangerous overseas secret mission (because she's supposedly the only one who can identify the bad guy) really feels horribly contrived.
For all that the book rattles along and is a decent read.

Really impressed with how Thor built on The Lions of Lucerene. His storytelling sharpened at the expense of a little more narrative and a little less action in the middle of the book. However, it served him well and I think he really developed Scot Harvath.

After reading Flynn/Mills' Mitch Rapp series, I think the only thing missing is a true purpose. Serving your country is honourable, but my only critique is that the origin stories just aren't as good.

I have heard many compare the two stories as similar. The parallels are naturally there, however Rapp had a much deeper purpose given the personal impact of terrorism on his life vs. Harvath. Regardless, this series is shaping up to be a very fun one.

I thought this book fell a bit flat. The story didn't really seem that feasible, and there wasn't even that much action to make up for it.

I am in the minority when it comes to this book, but I just really didn't enjoy reading it. Maybe it is the fact that after two books with Scot Harvath as the main character I just don't like him very much. Or maybe it is that the books are just too simple. I honestly don't know. I am always amazed that in books such as these the principal character always finds someone to love that is equally gorgeous and amazing at everything. I think that may have been the biggest turn off was Meg Jacskon. I just really didn't like that character.

The book itself read fine. The silver eyed assassin had a really interesting twist. There was lots of destruction, which should be caused in these types of books. There are a few characters that are good. Traveling all over the world was interesting as well. Just overall I thought the book was kind of blah, which again, I know is different than almost all reviews. I will try the third Harvath book, but that will be the end, if I don't enjoy it.

Three stars...I liked it. I'm thinking Brad Thor and I need some time apart after reading two of his books right in a row. Sometimes I just laugh with how perfect Scot Harvath is. Not only does he have rippling pectorals, but he is the top secret service agent in all of the United States. He's also the top agent in the CIA and the FBI and he's not even part of those organizations. I did really like the opening dilemma involving the plane and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Part of me liked Meg, but part of me didn't like how she would just seem to wilt whenever Harvath came around. I was definitely surprised by Nadal's counterpart, and I liked that turn of events. Overall, it was an ok book and I liked it.

Entertaining. However, the idea that the CIA had to quickly train a civilian and insert her in a dangerous mission just so she can identify their target was a bit too much.

Scot Harvath..need I say more? The whole series is excellent. The only downfall I have with the series is that he goes into explain things which he explained already in each book before. Beyond that, I have love reading this series and crave more after I finish each one. Brad Thor has easily became one of my favorite authors and Scot Harvath is an excellent main character

A fun read, a little predictable in some places and a few surprises. A couple places where I felt the main character would have done something different and avoided the situation they fell into, but it was needed to drive the plot forward.

I like these books as they read quick, entertain, and I enjoy the gun references and tactical situations.

Not what I expected after book 1. This book starts slower and doesn’t have a smooth transition from the first book even though it is loosely tied to it. Unkown characters are thrown about like the reader should know them even though they were not in the first book. Overall, I found the writing to be unclear, especially in the first half of the book.

There were several places where I thought the story was weak. There are too many to list them all but the whole situation in the Libyan compound with the silver eye assassin was absurd which then makes the scenes on the Italian island even more of a stretch. The ending was too convenient with so many characters being connected then all of them converging at the same place and time.

The history between Morrell and Scot was not explained and their interactions were not realistic especially at the end. At other times Scot seems to sound like a teenager when he talks about most all of the female characters. However, I'm glad the author doesn't have Scot get seriously involved with anyone or get hung up with romantic liaisons and details. I definitely don't want that kind of filler into this genre of books. I do find it interesting that the author often has a woman character do something stupid because she will not listen to the experienced person who is in charge. Hope this does not become a trend in all of his books.

Overall, I think the new characters are weaker in this book, the dialogue more puerile, the story less interesting and the writing less polished. However, it is a quick read and I'm engaged enough in the main character to read the third book to see how it is written.

Book 2 is Scott Harvath. Got several to go before I get to my signed edition of Near Dark. I was really hoping 5he silver eyed beauty would end up being a good person but hey can't win them all.
