Tolkien'in çocukluğu, dillere ilgi duyması, eğitimi, vs. kısaca kitabın ilk yarısı çok çok iyiydi ama sonraki kısımları, özellikle son yılları o kadar iyi anlatılmamış gibi geldi bana. Oysa ünlü olduktan sonraki zamanlarına dair tanıklıklar, kaynaklar çok daha kolay ulaşılabilir olduğundan dolayı daha ayrıntılı ve özenli bir anlatım olabilirdi diye düşünüyorum. Erken final yaptırılan dizi sonları gibiydi kitabın son bölümleri. Yine de Tolkien ve bir şeylere tutkuyla bağlanmak hakkında çok şey öğrendim bu biyografiden. Yazarın eşi için yaptığı fedakarlıkların farkına vardığım kısımları da beni çok düşündürdü.

Hiç Tolkien oku(ya)mamış biri bile bu kadar sevdiyse bu kitabı Tolkien hayranlarının alacağı zevki düşünemiyorum :)

Rereading JRRT's biography, I kept thinking: what a privilege it must have been to be one of his Leeds and Oxford students. Especially Leeds, where Tolkien and E.V.Gordon had their Viking Club - a lot of Old English / Old Norse singing and mead-drinking fun. But, in a way, we are all Tolkien's students, if we choose to.

"Володар Перстнів" Дж. Р. Р. Толкіна – чи не єдина культова книга, яку я спершу побачив у кіно, а прочитав вже згодом. Я не пишаюся і тим, що дивився всі три фільми не лише в російській студійній озвучці, але й у перекладі Гобліна – така вже недоля людин, котрі дожили до сорока. Але найгірше навіть не це; найгірше те, що я досі не читав українського перекладу цієї книги. Відмовка дурацька – мені не подобається сучасне видання, а старішого тепер ніде не знайдеш. 

А от "Гобіта" таки прочитав перед екранізацією Пітера Джексона, і прочитав з величезним задоволенням. Аж таким, що готовий купувати майже все, що "Астролябія" видає про Толкіна. Зокрема і біографію, написану Гамфрі Карпентером.

Читаючи книгу "Дж. Р. Р. Толкін. Біографія" якось дуже відчуваєш, що Гамфрі Карпентер – фанат Професора. Біограф встиг познайомитися з Джоном Толкіном наживо, а після його смерті отримав доступ до його записів, листів, щоденників, а також поспілкувався із родичами та друзями. Книга вийшла в 1977 році, ще до того, як син Толкіна Крістофер видав "Сильмариліон" та впорядкував решту записів, які стосувалися історії та міфології Середзем'я.

Джон Толкін прожив довге і плідне життя, але більшість пригод та подій в цьому житті сталися в досить молодому віці. Не оминула його і участь у безглуздій Великій Війні, котра забрала життя в багатьох його друзів та мільйонів людей по всьому світу. В окопах Першої світової Толкін побачив, як прості і щирі люди, в жодному разі не народжені для війни, знаходять в собі мужність боротися з непереборними обставинами у світі, який збожеволів.  Щось це мені нагадує...

Історія кохання Джона до Едіт – романтична, але дуже своєрідна, впродовж всенького життя для Професора вочевидь більше значення мала дружба з чоловіками, хоч і там, за свідченнями біографа, не все було однозначним.

Починаючи з тридцятих років ХХ ст. аж до смерті, в житті Джона Толкіна нічого, крім народження дітей, роботи в навчальних закладах та творчості – не відбувається. Але Гамфрі Карпентер розповідає про цей період не менш захопливо, а ще дуже ніжно і людяно. Оксфордський професор Джон Толкін постає тут геніальним автором і науковцем, але й, водночас, звичайною людиною, котра може ревнувати, заздрити, сумніватися і завзято прокрастинувати. 

Толкін дочекався заможного життя і справжньої слави, але вона ж його і обтяжувала, позаяк фанати з усього світу не лише писали йому листи та надсилали подарунки, а й телефонували і навіть могли прийти до дверей його помешкання.

На жаль, він не встиг сам довести до пуття та видати свій улюблений "Сильмариліон" – це вже зробив його син Крістофер. 

Біографія Дж. Р. Р. Толкіна залишає по собі світлий і дещо сумний післясмак, бо здається, що він міг залишити читачам значно більше історій про свій дивовижний вигаданий, але дуже справжній світ.

І страшенно хочеться нарешті прочитати "Володаря Перстнів" людською, чи то пак, звісно, українською мовою. 

"Астролябія", давайте вже, зробіть якесь подарункове видання!

Por lo que he leído, es la mejor biografía de J.R.R. Tolkien que se ha escrito, y es bastante interesante realmente.

Изключително богата и увлекателно написана биография. Животът и творчеството на Толкин са достатъчно интересни сами по себе си, но начинът, по който са представени тук ги прави достъпни за много широк кръг от читатели. И феновете на Толкин, и хора, които не са чели негови творби, ще намерят по нещо за себе си.

карпентер пише закохану книжку.
він хороший автор біографії, тому вибір окремих фактів доволі чесний: толкін буває людиною неприємною, і приховувати це було б безсенсовно. але одразу видно його любов до толкінових текстів і до самого письменника – радісну, гарячу, готову погоджуватися і пробачати. а ще – активно виправдовувати. ця палка апологетика іноді звучить аж занадто фальшиво, та, зрештою, хіба чекали б ми чогось іншого від закоханого юнака, який оспівує об'єкт своєї пристрасті.
але якщо ви, на свою голову, спробуєте читати цю біографію більш-менш критично, тримаючи в пам'яті не тільки те речення, на якому ваші очі зараз, а й щось із попередніх сторінок, то, попри карпентерову захопленість, вам іноді ставатиме сумно, а іноді – аж незручно. головний її герой – заздрісний (він майже порвав стосунки з льюїсом після виходу – а ще гірше, успіху – "хронік нарнії"; і про літературну творчість жодного зі своїх колег-інклінгів він, схоже, не був доброї думки), егоїстичний (оскільки він не приймав прогресу, в будинку толкінів ніколи не було ні посудомийної, ні пральної машини – незважаючи на те, що едит, толкінова дружина, сама займалася господарством, навіть коли на старості мала артрит. о так, постійної прислуги в них теж не було, бо нащо, коли є дружина) сноб (карпентер наголошує, що він не любив людей, схильних "не бесідувати, а розповідати", – але, мабуть, забуває, що сам писав про толкінову схильність говорити об співрозмовника, а не з ним). так, толкін по-своєму геній, але це не робить його хорошою людиною – а найбільша, як на мене, проблема книжки полягає в намаганні довести, що все-таки робить. утім, може статися, що мої цінності просто занадто відрізняються від цінностей карпентера, і там, де він бачить нормальний порядок речей і привід повеселитися з недостойного толкіна оточення, я нащось обурююся.

First half was riveting and then it kind of petered out towards end (discussing publishers & such), failed to mention Tolkein's rage at the Novus Ordo, and barely mentioned the lives of his children or his broth Hillary, so not 5 star. Otherwise, magnificent. What a man.

I was reading this book very slowly, but I'm still sorry I finished it today, it has been such a heart-warming experience.

"'One of my strongest opinions,' he once wrote, 'is that investigation of an author's biography is an entirely vain and false approach to his works.'"
I actually believe this to be true, so I was reading this bio with a certain compunction. But it really is very respectful, very proper.

What I loved most were the explanations of how Tolkien's work in linguistics influenced his fiction.
'[Finnish] was the language that would eventually emerge in his stories as 'Quenya' or High-elven.'
I should have guessed, but this came as a surprise :)

The insights into the work of Tolkien's mind are fascinating:
'In later years he especially remembered 'the bitter disappointment and disgust from schooldays with the shabby use made in Shakespeare of the coming of "Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane hill": I longed to devise a setting by which the trees might really march to war.'

'By the time he reached middle age his imagination no longer needed to be stimulated by experience; now it could nourish itself upon these accumulated memories. Here is how he himself explained this process, when describing the creation of The Lord of the Rings:
'One writes such a story not out of the leaves of trees still to be observed, nor by means of botany and soil-science; but it grows like a seed in the dark out of the leaf-mould of the mind: out of all that has been seen or thought or read, that has long ago been forgotten, descending into the deeps. No doubt there is much selection, as with a gardener: what one throws on one's personal compost-heat; and my mould is evidently made largely of linguistic matter.'

About his friendship with C. S. Lewis:
'It was partly the spirit of the times - you may find something of the same sense of male companionship in the writings of Chesterton; and it was a feeling shared, though with less self-awareness, by many men of the day. It has precedents in ancient civilisations, and closer at hand it was in part the result of the First World War, in which so many friends had been killed that the survivors felt the need to stay close together.'

I find this especially lovely, about the stories Tolkien was creating for his children:
"These tales, invented in the early days at Northmoor Road, were about the irreppressible villain 'Bill Stickers', a huge hulk of a man who always got away with everything. His name was taken from a notice on an Oxford gate that said BILL STICKERS WILL BE PROSECUTED, and a similar source provided the name of the righteous person who was always in pursuit of Stickers, 'Major Road Ahead'."

This book is entertaining, profoundly moving, and intelligent. Highly recommended to all fans of 'The Lord of the Rings'.

It was on a summer’s day, and he was sitting by the window in the study at Northmoor Road, laboriously marking School Certificate exam papers. Years later he recalled: ‘One of the candidates had mercifully left one of the pages with no writing on it (which is the best thing that can possibly happen to an examiner) and I wrote on it: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit”. Names always generate a story in my mind. Eventually I thought I’d better find out what hobbits were like. But that’s only the beginning.’

This is a beautifully written biography of an extraordinary man. Tolkien was many things - philologist, poet, artist, Medievalist, professor, husband and father - but it is perhaps his boundless imagination that captured the adoration of readers worldwide. I enjoyed the glimpses into his mind, the little details in his life that later influenced his work (how the name 'Gamgee' came about, for instance), and his perfectionist zeal for unending revisions of his own work. He was so painstaking in the details of his work, for example, that he needed to be sure that moon phases, dates, and even weather patterns were all cohesive in his writing of The Lord of the Rings. This was due in part to the fact that, in Tolkien's mind, he was not writing fantasy or a made-up story; rather, he was a scribe of history and mythology. He did not "create" Middle Earth - he discovered it.

In short, I believe this to be essential reading for any fan of Tolkien, and I look forward to revisiting his books with a new appreciation for his life and work.

«…обкладинка «Баллатайн Букс» мовби й зовсім не до «Гобіта» була. На ній був зображений пагорб, двоє ему й дивне дерево з круглими фруктами. Толкін не стримався: «Який це має стосунок до твору? Що це за місце? Що за ему? І що то таке на передньому плані з рожевими кулями?» Коли надійшла відповідь, що в художника не було часу прочитати книгу, а предмет з рожевими кулями мав символізувати «різдвяну ялинку», Толкін тільки й відповів: «Мені починає здаватися, що я втрапив до божевільні».

І поки я пішла ґуґлити цю надзвичайну обкладинку, сподіваючись, що десь у Всесвітній мережі ті ему збережені для поціновувачів, скажу, що біографію, що писав Девін Браун, і яка вийшла у нас в 2019-му, я б назвала гарним конспектом тієї, що написав Карпентер.
