This review is for books 4-7 (The Siege, The Shattering, The Burning, and The Hatchling)

Ye gods, I can't believe I had forgotten about this series. Guardians of Ga'Hoole is brilliant.

For one, the world-building is fantastic. There's nothing vague about it, it's interesting and intricate and I just love it.

Also, I absolutely adore the characters...well, most of them. I hate Nyra with the fire of a thousand suns, and all the other Pure Ones are just kinda meh. But I love Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, Ezylryb, Martin, Ruby, Eglantine, Primrose, Mrs. P...hell, even Otulissa has grown on me. And now we have Nyroc, another awesome character to add to the list.

I have to add a disclaimer: this series can get pretty dark for a children's series . It's not all sunshine, sad things happen. Owls die, and unfairly too.  *sobs* Like Phillip. He was a good owl, a good friend to Nyroc. . So this might upset some younger readers and annoy those who like them HEAs. But me? I like a little bit of darkness, it balances things out. Life is unfair, people can be cruel. Sometimes I just want everyone to live happily ever after, but other times I want some sadness. That probably made no sense whatsoever, but screw it, I'm keeping it.

My point is, I love this series and I hope you do too.

A new story to be told, the pure ones are almost gone, but they still hope for a king. The new hatchling who is descended from Klud, maybe the pure ones hope to build back their evil empire. But the hatchling is not convinced he has many questions. He has a gift of fire sight and he’s now on the run. This new adventure is where we learn about the wolves beyond this is their introduction into the series. Very good read.

An excellent book!!!! I love this series so much, it's amazing and I'm an adult!
I was waiting for a book to be more about Nyroc and here it is! The poor guy. What terrible parents he was unfortunately born to. I was a tad disappointed to not have Soren in the book at all except when mentioned. I hope that Soren comes back into the picture again along with the rest of the band. I want Soren and Nyroc to live happily together in the Great Tree or somewhere. They all deserve a happy family.
So excited to read about what happens next!! Can't believe this is only the halfway point of the series though!

I loved this book just as much as the others even though it is from a different point of view. It was very interesting to see what was happening in Nyrock's mind and life. it also told us more about the Pure Ones twisted way of life. It has the same feel as the other books and I would recommend reading it and the rest of this incredible series.

Even though I missed Soren and the Band, the newly introduced Nyroc and his story solidly stood on their own two feet, at least in this installment. I'm excited to learn where Nyroc's destiny leads him, but I do hope that we'll get to see Soren and his friends again. It looks like, from the old characters, Otulissa will be most prominent in Nyroc's life so far, and she has never been my favorite. But she's definitely grown on me. I also loved learning more about the legends of Hoole, and I hope we'll keep seeing more of that. Finally, the dire wolves! I cannot wait for them to be fully introduced.

The first book that isn't from Soren's POV, I was pretty impressed with how well written Nyroc is and what kind of character he is. He's a character that doesn't really know who they are, shadows by his parents. I look forward to seeing where they take him in the future books.

An interesting look into the life of Nyrok the son of Nyra and Clud. I really liked seeing Nyra in this book in a different setting than we normally do. The way she interacts with Nyrok is chilling but also great for his character development.
There are multiple cases of characters popping in for one reason and then vanishing without a trace throughout this book. I won’t divulge specifics here due to spoilers. I hope however that this arc in the Gog series is tied up including all these “unnecessary characters” only time will tell.

3.5 ⭐ Nyroc is effortlessly good at everything he does which I don't like—it enables a character to be lazy—but in his case, I can let it slide because his journey was very painful and he struggled to survive because of his upbringing. His weaknesses compensate for his ridiculous talents.
