I loved this book because it was exciting and interesting. It is book 8 so you will have to read books 1-7 to get to it, but they are all exciting.
Its about owls on a journey to the great ga'hoole tree in the middle of the sea, and the "pure ones" want to destroy them.
I truly recommend this book to people who love adventurer and fantasy books.

The Hatchling and The Outcast are my favorites so far. They are stories of greatest character and great redemption. I get mushy eyes reading these.

This book is a kind of "history repeats itself" book. After leaving the Pure Ones, Nyroc travels and adopts the name Coryn, but those he meet eventually suggest that he travel to the Beyond. He travels there and becomes a great collier, but that's about as much as I can say without giving spoilers.

It's hard to tell sometimes whether or not a book should be better when it's intended for children. Her plots always seem a bit convenient and rushed to me, but there's an inherent cuteness to this series. This book introduced a wolf (as opposed to owl) culture, which for some reason was Scotch. I don't know why she thinks all wolves are from Scotland, just like I don't know why she thinks all polar bears are German...

This one is really good and is closing the story on Soren's adventures and now mainly focusing on Coryn. But no worries, he is still always there. This story is very inspirational as is the entire series. Not only is it full of action, it teaches some very important lessons. One is that no matter where you come from, there is always a way to be noble. As when Soren addresses Coryn in saying "You who were born into evil found good. You who were raised in tyranny sought equality. You who were schooled in brutality learned only mercy. You who were taught the dishonorable discovered honor.” Also, like the whole series, it teaches the belief in legends. That its the thing that fires us all. They're more than just stories. Coryn didn't know if the Guardians were real but was guided in his faith in the legends. (Remind you of anyone else?) he even believes he's not good enough to go. Very well written.

This took the series to a really interesting place. I was a tad disappointed by the oh-so-brief glimpse we got of Soren near the end - oh yeah, this character used to be important, and all these things happened to him *off-stage*. Otherwise, very positive.

I enjoyed this book and think that the author's message is that people or owls are not always what you think. The other owls thought Nyroc was bad because his parents were bad and he had a scar that made him look like his mother. But Nyroc was not like his parents, and tried hard to prove to the others he was good. I think the author wants us to judge people for who they are and not becuase of the way they look or their family.

I feel like a few things in this one could have been fleshed out more. In particular it seems like Otulissa and Gwyndor barely catch up to "educate" Coryn before he's fulfilling his destiny. Having them join him sooner, or having one more book before he retrieves the ember would have given more time to feel a real bond between them, and to for him to learn what he needs and realize what he's meant to do. As it is their inclusion almost feels unnecessary as he seems to magically learn everything with little to no help from them.

Nyroc, who changes his name to Coryn, must first prove himself before he is able to see his uncle Soren. But after watching Philip being murdered and loosing half his feathers he found almost no way of reaching his goal. So when his feathers grow back he flies to Beyond the Beyond the land of the endless volcanoes. He is then taught by Otalisa how to be a collier with the hopes of finding and diving into a volcano for the Ember of Hoole. The story of The Outcast is one of trust, friendship, and courage.
