S.M. Kidd has some spiritual roots, and remains an inspiration in many ways. Continue to strive towards what you love to do, have faith, and stay true.
I usually find myself shying away from story collections but this one has become a particular favorite of mine. I listened to the audio version of this book which is a collection of 4 cd's. I found myself so moved, and at times enlightened, that I chose to start each cd over to listen to them a second time. Sue Monk Kidd's way of really seeing the lessons in the small glimpses of everyday life has made me more observant in my own daily life. Now it is up to me to continue that mindful observance.
i saved a good portion of this book as i found much which i would incorporate into my life if i was able. her stories felt timeless, like the myths that are invented by all cultures to explain things. Firstlight has insights for everyone.
While Sue Monk Kidd is definitely in the league of contemplatives like Merton and Nouwen, this book was inspirational. It would probably appeal more to women than men because it explores the feminine perspective more. I am glad I read the book and it was a quick read. I gave it two stars.
I started reading this book and didn’t think I was going to like it..once she started give some anecdotes about her marriage and children and how spiritually and lessons of life came to her, I couldn’t put the book down. She makes you think about her life and I found many similarities in my relationships within my family. A good resource book to go back to read some passages as life closes in on you..loved her insights and thoughts. A short book with pearls of wisdom.
I had a hard time motivating myself to finish this one. Sometimes the essays don't feel very connected around their theme. Her ideas were good; it just felt choppy overall. Disconnected and random.
Wonderful, wonderful collection of her earlier short writings. Loved how she categorized each of them into topics ... so that several stories had the same underlying theme.
Well-written. Very inspiring thoughts. Reminds me of a mixture of Anne Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Madeleine L'Engle's Walking on Water (two more inspiring & well-written books)
I listened to this audio book while driving, as the short inspirational essays were perfect for short distances. Although a bit too theological for my taste, Sue Monk Kidd had interesting insights on life, family life in particular. Delivered in a southern accent, these essays reminded me of certain southern family values. While I loved The Secret Life of Bees, wonderful southern fiction, I don't think I would have much cared for this book had I read it rather than listened to it.
I found this at my local Army library and enjoyed it very much. Early on I was concerned when she had a quote from Zen (Thomas Merton influence) and there is another towards the end. But fortunately most of her contemplations are not in the "empty yourself" category. She is reminded of God in so many ways, usually from being observant of creation and the people around her.
Exquisitely written inspirational short stories chock full of spiritual insights. Some of them made me cry. I often would stop and just take a moment to hold the words in my heart. I love Sue Monk Kidd. She inspires me to write about my life.
