I already knew a lot of the facts in the book and have always admired Kate Hepburn. Spencer Tracy definitely had a spell over her. I’m not sure she got as much as she gave but she understood the terms of the arrangement and seems to have accepted it.

The subtitle here in Christopher Anderson's 1997 profile of Tracy-Spencer turns peculiar when viewed in the narrative. Spencer Tracy is portrayed - he is - an abusive alcoholic, petulant most times prickly and a real horse's ass. Why Katharine Hepburn stuck with him can't be explained in any co-dependent theories. The fact that this awkward relationship - Tracy remained married, but didn't live with his wife, Louise, and children - never really hit the press can only be explained by 1950s and 1960s standards.
That some people consider Spencer Tracy the greatest actor of his generation may be true, based on his body of work. But the pains he internalized seemed to put him in an early grave.
Katy, on the other hand, lived to a ripe age of 90, and never found a replacement for the love of her life. She also could be aloof, prickly, hard to please and I'm sure she was tough to live with unless she paid you well.

Extremely thorough biography of both Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and their relationship. I really enjoyed it, the writing is very good and eloquent and it never felt slow, it's just a very long book, but it's chock full of everything you could ever imagine wanting to know about these stars.

I am not sure I have a better understanding of either Katherine Hepburn or Spencer Tracy.

Love is different things to different people.
Views and opinion are always different on what constitutes love.

I don't get the affair that went on between these two at all.

Katherine Hepburn was apparently very devoted to Spencer Tracy.
So much so that each time he went on a drunken rampage
She was there to quietly clean him and the situation up.
Is that love?
If Spencer Tracy had not been an actor he would just been some poor drunken slob that nobody cared about.
Is enabling someone to almost drink themselves to death love?

I don't know how he felt about her.
According to this book he liked to call her cruel nicknames, and during one bender he assaulted her

Is that love?

And yet because they were such wonderful actors
We are just supposed to buy that they had some beautiful love story?
I don't buy it.
I think it is a load of crap.

Very thorough. He disagrees with a few other biographies in that he firmly believes there was no lull in the relationship between spence and Kate in the late 50s and early 60s. However, a wonderful source.

This is a very well written book about a difficult situation. A classic love triangle with one difference, it involved three people who tried very hard not to hurt each other. Although I will say many of the stories seemed to indicate that Spencer Tracy did not at all mind hurting his "soulmate" and "one true love" Katharine Hepburn. I have always loved Spencer Tracy as an actor, but he was really a horrible human being. Cruel to those he supposedly loved most, a violent drunk and a unrepentant woman chaser. It is dissappointing to learn that of all the Hollywood bad boys, Spencer Tracy was quite possibly the worst. But there was something about him that Katharine Hepburn really and truly loved. This book doesn't tell us what, but it is still an entertaining read and informative read.

Great love story of Hepburn and Tracy. Obvious that three people (Hepburn, Tracy, Mrs. Tracy) were trying not to hurt one another while accepting the fact that Tracy and Hepburn were true soulmates.

Amazing, lovely, in-depth biography of both Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and their films - and personal lives - together.

Amazing book! I was really shocked to discover that although Spencer doted on Kate while filming the movie Woman of the Year, he gradually became controlling and abusive towards her. Whenever Kate had to leave Spencer for long periods of time due to work, he'd yell and scream and beg her not to go, thinking that she was intending to abandon him. That was really weird! Especially because of the fact that he was already married, but never filed for divorce. But despite how many times his bad side appeared, Kate always tried to make sure Spencer's needs and feelings came first.
