A book that I think everyone should read and something I should have had while in college. It is baffling that the current education system does not educate people on items such as health insurance, a 401k, debt, etc. This book works as a great intro to anyone in personal financing. It does not encompass everything nor do I feel should you take all the advice in there but it is a beneficial start.

Good introduction to some basic financial concepts and vocabulary. Details and examples are U.S. focused so the advice won't apply directly to everyone who reads it. But it does a good job introducing the financial concepts that can seem overwhelming to get into (i.e. investing and house buying).

Great for getting started in personal finance. It starts off really basic, as if one hasn't grasped the basics of banking and budgeting. However, once the author gets into investments, retirement planning, home vs rent, taxes, and insurance, it's very useful information.

Would recommend for those entering into the work force full-time or trying to get a hold of their finances.

I found this book extremely helpful at 28-30 years old, when it was time to clean up my chaotic finances and buy my first home. It's a lot to take on at once, so it was great to focus on the chapters I needed when I needed them, and come back to others later when it was time for them. I have recommended and given away copies of this book to young people. I'm in my 40s now but keeping my copy because it's still a useful reference.

This was an interesting read, but it goes into too much depth on the minutia of insurance and tax breaks. If you want a simple guide to getting your personal finances in order, read I Will Teach You to Be Rich.

This book is ultra digestible and easy to read and out of many self help and finance books, I never once felt the all knowing tone of condescension.

This book probably would have been more useful to me a year ago but I am rating this high in hopes that other people pick it up because it is an excellent place to start on your financial literacy journey

We had to read this in econ class in high school (2005). Since then I've read it at least 3 more times, and even though I've reach a bunch of other finance books, I always come back to this one as the best. I should probably get an updated version...

As someone whose parents made a series of poor financial decisions and were financially illiterate because their parents made a series of poor financial decisions and were financially illiterate- I decided that enough was enough and that isn’t a good enough excuse anymore. This book is a 10/10 must read for anyone who doesn’t even know where to start and has no idea what to do. While I am in no way a financial savant, I feel at least somewhat competent now and have put together a game plan for my financial future. Again, I can’t stress this enough, 10/10.

n  Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.n

—Charles Dickens

I bought this book shortly after I graduated college. If only I had read it. Instead, like so many of my wishful book purchases, this lingered on my shelf for years until, finally, chastened by time, filled with regrets, I picked it up to see what I had missed.

The wisdom that Kobliner has to share with us is, in essence, just an application of Mr. Micawber’s sage financial advice. But in an economic world as complex and perilous as ours, remaining solvent is a little more complicated than just spending less than you make. Thankfully, on a wide array of topics—from paying off debts to buying insurance, from choosing a mortgage to filing taxes—Kobliner is full of simple and sensible advice. Because of her accessible style, her non-judgmental tone, and her focus on people who do not make much money, I think this book is an excellent resource for young adults. (But of course they actually have to read it, not just leave it on their bookshelves.)

Reading it now, I was struck by how very American the book is. Whole sections—such as paying off student debt, finding affordable medical insurance, and even a good deal of retirement planning—would be unnecessary in most of Europe. Indeed, in a land without a social safety net, it behooves every person to be a miniature financial expert. Books like this do not exactly compensate for not having public healthcare. But I suppose it is better than nothing.

If I hadn't already read a lot of this advice on Reddit's /r/personalfinance, this would have been the book I'd wanted to read a few years ago. There's so much good stuff in here, and it's not that boring to read, in my opinion. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I already know of (or follow) a lot of what was presented in this book, but I'm still considering buying a copy of my own, because there's a lot of detailed information about home buying, and I think I eventually would like to do that.

Bottom line: I think that this is a valuable book, and the fact that the author has updated it several times since its original 1996 publication speaks to her credibility and perseverance in the field.
