So adorable. I really need to read more childrens books they are so cute. I haven´t really read anything buy Roald Dahl before so I need to catch up now.
Roald Dahl has yet to disappoint, and me and my children have been reading his work for over a year now. The feel is always perfect, the stories are always perfect, the beginning, middle, and end always perfect. I think it’s safe to say that Dahl is our favorite children’s author, I know without a doubt he is mine. One of these days I’m going to read some of his adult literature, but for now we are loving his children’s tales. Fantastic Mr. Fox was undoubtably Fantastic!
This was my first experience reading a book by Roald Dahl, although I've seen several film adaptations of his various books, including the Wes Anderson adaptation of this one (which was excellent, by the way). I watched the Wes Anderson film before reading this book, and my impression of the book was no doubt influenced by my enjoyment of the film.
This was an entertaining childrens' book, witty and funny with humor touching the sensibilities of adults yet remaining appropriate and accessible to children. I read this book out loud, along with my good friend Chris Fertig, to our children, and I agree with him that the ideal age for this book is 6 to 10 years. Dahl certainly relies on the grotesque, which may turn off some parents.
Speaking of which, Dahl was decidedly irreligious, which is apparently reflected throughout his childrens' literature. I believe this holds true for Fantastic Mr. Fox, which ultimately rests on the assumption that adults and their world are nasty, evil, and irredeemable. Of course, that Dahl rests on such an assumption doesn't prevent the reader, parent and child, from deriving appropriate enjoyment from the grotesque humor found in this book. Parents might simply need to put that humor in a framework different than Dahl's.
Dahl's worldview, as evident in the book, is what prevents me from giving this book five stars. The book simply lacks some of the profundities of our world, such as imperfection and redemption. Here, the characters are either utterly bad (the humans) or utterly good (the animals). The one exception to this is the underlying message that humans cannot triumph over nature completely, which remains a fine lesson.
All told, this book was a fun read and I wouldn't shy away from reading it again to my children.
I don't think I've actually read this book (or any Ronald Dahl books), but I have seen the films and can only vaguely remember. Thinking from an educator's (secondary) perspective, maybe I'm thinking too hard, but I do like Badger's questioning of Mr. Fox's actions and balancing between what is right and wrong and the ethics behind every or certain actions. It's a silly book and still fun, regardless. I want to see the movie again!
I am still in the year of reading Roald Dahl. My goal is to read every Roald Dahl book, that I can get my hands on in 2017. I also have a book buddy who is doing it with me!
This is not my favorite book by Roald Dahl...
"Fantastic Mr. Fox is on the run! The three meanest farmers around are out to get him. Fat Boggis, squat Bunce, and skinny Bean have joined forces, and they have Mr. Fox and his family surrounded. What they don’t know is that they’re not dealing with just any fox–Mr. Fox would never surrender. But only the most fantastic plan ever can save him now."
I've hyped this story up without ever knowing clearly what it was about. Maybe because it was about foxes. I loved the illustrations as always, there's something very special and unique with Quentin Blake's illustrations but the story itself wasn't really my cup of tea. It was mildly enjoyable even with the slight problematic things going on. Not sure if it's a 3 star rating or a 3.5 star rating tough
