Hilarious!
Absolutely LOVED it!!!
Reminded me of those great movies from the late 60s:
Casino Royale with Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress or any of the old Sean Connery 007 films.
~~~Seriously strange how they can't/won't make films or write books like these today because it may offend someone's delicate sensibilities!!! Get over yourself!!! It's all in fun!
ตลกดี ถ้าจะให้จัดประเภท ผมคงจัดเป็นนวนิยายสไตล์สัจนิยมมหัศจรรย์ชวนหัว ด้วยตัวละครแปลกๆ ที่ต่างขับเคลื่อนด้วยแรงขับทางเพศผนวกกับความโลภ ไล่ล่าน้ำเชื้อเพื่อหวังรวยทางลัดด้วยนางนกต่อและยาเม็ดมหัศจรรย์
เหมาะกับการอ่านเพลินๆ รื่นรมย์กับอารมณ์ขันอันรุ่มรวยของตัวละคร
Hilarious! This novel convinces me easily that Dahl is one of the most talented pens of our age. Along with the children and mysterious stories he’s written, my first experience in reading his adult literature has been a jolly good one.
I spare you the spoilers if you haven’t read this book. Besides, do not read the reviews here on goodreads page in case you want to read this book. Just let every bit of it come by surprise, because it is so well-written and it will make you laugh.
I am usually distant to erotic books, because they are not really erotic. They are for a bunch of men and women who jerk off or feed their fantasies to get away from their boring relationships or for those who want to add a bit of spice to their sexual lives. These types of books are full of unnecessary details of sex in progress. All is about showing how they copulate. Spare me the porn literature. I can use tumblr for that, no need to spend money on publishing that rubbish.
My Uncle Oswald is nothing like that. It is a sexual book and it is so artistically written.
I don’t really understand why this book is considered to be sexist and even homophobic. Everyone is so sensitive nowadays. Say something ugly about womanhood, or manhood or whateverhood, you are sexist. Even I might be sexist because I separated women and men in their hoods in my previous sentence. Or I didn’t count the ones who don’t want to have a gender. This book is a fiction which is about sex and lots of things are exaggerated due its humour. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is fiction, yet we like it. It doesn’t make you a pedophile. As in this story, Oswald might be an asshole but a lot of men would be just like him if they just could. You’ll get what I mean when you read that he never sleeps with the same woman for the second time. (Oops, am I sexist now?) Another element is “rape” in this book, which is in my opinion not really raping. It could be discussed further though, yet rape is another disturbing fact and why should we avoid using disturbing facts, especially in fictional stories? Murdering, torture, injustice, war are all disturbing and wrong in our consciences, but these things exist. Using disturbing elements doesn’t make a book disgusting.
I should end my review with my regards to Mr. Dahl for his particular praise to Turkish women in this very book. Thanks mister, that was an extra smile on my face. *kiss*
En kollega anbefalte å lese Onkel Oswald av Roald Dahl i bokklubben. Siden Dahl er kjent som barnebokforfatter, var det med nysgjerrighet at jeg leste boka. Som Wiki sier er boken skrevet som «dagboken til fortellerens fiktive Onkel Oswald, en rik herremann, hvis seksuelle erobringer utgjør innholdet i disse fortellingene. Forretningsmannen Oswald Hendryks Cornelius oppdager omkring 1919 verdens kraftigste afrodisiakum, den sudanske billen. Bokas første del handler om hans egne eventyr som viril. I resten boka samarbeider han med forførersken Yasmin Howcomely og kjemikeren A.R. Woresley om å etablere en høystatus sædbank med stjålne «donasjoner» fra flere av tidens mest berømte menn.»
Boka har noen sylskarpe beskrivelser, og veksler mellom inngående beskrivelser av måltider og annet, mens andre setninger er kortfattede som «femten strå.»
Det var artig å diskutere boka med mine mannlige kolleger. Et forfriskende innslag, men jeg har lest mer givende bøker!
A novel length adult book from Roald Dahl, with his witty storytelling that is surprisingly quite compelling and amusing reading.
A tale about an uncle with get rich schemes of the most elaborate, and sex-driven kind. This is pegged as 'rollicking, raunchy, outrageous' on the cover. Indeed.
Dahl's adult tales do have an outright sexual or innuendo about them, and this is the pinnacle. Freud, whom is one of the targets in the plot, would have a lot to say about this overt fixation.
It's sexist, racist, brash homophobic, with some ableist slurs, and actually so many offensive and abrasive moments. Shows up the times, the mysoginist male perspective, and some crued descriptions of sex.
His female character, Yasmin Howcomely, is the shining light in this, as a fast witted, scheming, and sassy co-conspirator. Her commentary on sex, men's behaviour and performance are the redeeming feature of the book.
Dahl'dan müthiş komik, zekice yazılmış bir başyapıt. Neden daha fazla okunup konuşulmadığını asla anlayamayacağız.
Už si nepamätám, kedy a kde som túto knihu kúpil. Asi v nejakom výpredaji s viacerými inými, založil ju a objavil až teraz pri sťahovaní. Teraz som ju vzal do rúk, reku Dahla som ešte nikdy nečítal. Na obale píšu, že "ohromná zábava" a "dômyselne namiešaná zmes humoru, napätia a absurdity", na Goodreads známka okolo 3,9. Ono je to ale úplne inak.
Problém tejto knihy nie je konská dávka sexizmu. Nevadí, že hlavný hrdina má pravidlo, že so žiadnou ženou nebude viac ako jedenkrát. Lenže aj Barney z How I Met Your Mother je plastickejšia a duchaplnejšia postava. O Hankovi Moodyem z Californication ani nehovoriac.
Problémom tejto knihy je jej banálnosť, predvídateľnosť, mizerné a infantilné dialógy, ploché postavy - a fakt, že Roald Dahl vlastne vystaval celú zábavu na drogovaní (!) a znásilňovaní (!!!) ľudí. Toto má byť švanda? Preboha v akom svete? Pre akú vekovú a mentálnu kategóriu?
Ku cti autorovi patrí, že na biednu úroveň knihy a jej deja vás upozorňuje už od začiatku. Vy tak už po pár stranách tusíte, že toto bude niekde na úrovni Lady Fuckingham‎ovej, lenže horšie. Jasné, máte pochybnosti, veď je to ten ospevovaný Dahl. Ale potom príde 30. strana, vydatá štyridsiatnička spozná hlavného hrdinu-študenta a po krátkom rozhovore mu povie, aby ju "umiloval na smrť".
"'Ach, ty úchvatný mládenec!' vykríkla a skočila po mne ako tigrica." A vy viete, že od tejto knihy treba skočiť preč.
Vydržal som, dal som ešte ďalších sto strán a dúfal, že sa to zlepší. Nezlepšilo. Posledných 70 strán teda nechám iným odvážlivcom.
Knihu presúvam do kategórie "berte si ju, kto chcete, rýchlo a zadarmo".
Picked this up in Mexico City at a used bookstore.
An incredibly silly tale that anticipates viagra, sperm banks, and the business of fertility. Contra the cover lines ("bawdy, naughty,") the book is not particularly erotic; it almost seems to represent a very precocious child's tee-hee, mechanical view of sex.
Somehow, Dahl has written a parable about stealing sperm from famous men while completely avoiding the word "condom" (instead it's "the thing," "the rubbery thing," "little mackintosh.")
The book has not aged well, is laced with crude national stereotypes, and yet there is something very enjoyable at its core. And I kept imagining this story re-interpreted for TV or film, with the character of Yasmin upgraded to a fully-sentient, sophisticated being.
The chapter on harvesting Marcel Proust's semen is gasp-out-loud.
Salacious, easy, childish fun. Possibly the best beach read ever. It’s like a children’s book but for adults.
Absolutely loved it and will recommend it highly to anyone!
