All the reading she had done had given her a view of life that they had never seen.

This book was so heartwarming. And it just proved that Dahl was (and always will be) one of the best storytellers ever. The way he writes and how he draws you into the story will always amaze me. This is my second book of his, but it definitely won't be my last.

Amazing book, that I think everybody should read, at least once.

7yo Emily would be so happy right now!

Finally got around to reading this book and I'm so pleased it was so close to the movie I adored as a kid. The best scenes are definitely there and they still made me laugh.

As an adult though, I have to say Miss Honey treating Matilda as an equal was... weird to say the least.

Actual Rating 3.5 stars. The movie gets 5 stars!

I saw the movie before reading the book, which I think influenced my rating negatively. Had I read this book first, I am sure I would have enjoyed it more, but alas, I can't change the past.

You know that when we are kids, sometimes we get obsessed by certain movies, and keep watching them over and over again, reciting every single dialog and thus, unintentionally torturing our parents, right? Well, Matilda (1996) was one of those movies for me, in fact, I would say that, together with The Little Princess (1995), I re-watched them the most, followed by Jumanji (1995) and It Takes Two (1995).
I was so in love with Matilda, I couldn't stop watching. I found the girl intriguing and wonderful, so strong, intelligent and confident, so kind and good hearted, so deserving, all despite her circumstances, that even as a little girl myself, I couldn't help but being inspired by her. Oh, and there is magic!

Matilda is a true roll model, absolutely recommendable.

What a wonderful story!

Re-read 2018

Still every bit as good as when I read it for the first time when I was a little girl <3
Every time I read this, it leaves me with a smile on my face.

Oh Matilda... you were my first booklove <3
I can't count the times I have read this book, it's my absolute favorite childrens book and even now, as an adult, I love to reread it.

This is also the first book I read (and gifted) to my niece, who loved it just as much as I did :)

[For God's sake leave Roald Dahl alone! Sometimes, especially in FICTION, people are fat or bald or ugly, and if you, the adult, cannot handle it--believe me, your child will not be the one who's offended--please feel free to read something else. Rant over.]

Dear Matilda, how I'd love to skim your Goodreads profile. Your 'read' list would put mine to shame and I would be absolutely, one hundred percent okay with that. I do have to tell you that you aren't the first person who comes to mind when I hear the name Matilda, which leads me to wonder if you've ever read Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell? You must have, surely. Your parents would be pleased to hear they made a fabulous television adaptation of Cranford, though I doubt they're the kind of people who can appreciate the talents of Judi Dench as Miss Matty Jenkyns. By the way, what did you make of Brighton Rock at the age of four? I read it aged twenty-three and loved it.

Some days it seems like hardly any of my childhood dreams came true.

I never grew up to have Lynda Carter's cleavage:

I never grew up to be a sassy black woman with an afro, like my childhood idol, Willona Woods, from Good Times:

And I never (no matter how many times I tried) learned to fly or to move objects around with my eyes.

But, somehow, Roald Dahl knew about these childhood dreams. Knew that kids want to have a magical bustline, rare hair, or powerful eyes that make evildoers pay for their bad behavior.

And it's this ability, combined with his fantastic writing and humor, that makes his books what they are.

A third read of Matilda this week did not disappoint. Roald Dahl always gets it, and never gets old for me.

Reading with the kid.

Oh, Matilda is the penultimate Mary Sue, but you know what?

I don't care.

She's SO over-the-top brilliant, reading grown-up books after teaching herself to read by five-years-old, playing wonderful pranks to even the score at the injustice of the world and even getting superpowers when it becomes TOO MUCH to bear.

A wish-fulfillment novel? Absolutely! She even gets a much better family and solves all the problems and everything is LOVE AND LIGHT.

Unbelievable? Who cares! It's sweet and Miss Trunchbull was NASTY HORRIBLE and WICKED and deserves EVERYTHING she got!

Plus, I got a little girl to say, "That was AWESOME, daddy!"

Fair enough. Fair enough.

This was such a super cute, short read. The illustrations were delightful! This was well written and Matilda is such a fun character, I couldn't help but like her. Having watched the movie first, I am happy to report that the book is just as cute as the movie and there are no major differences between the two. I definitely recommend this one to those looking for a good young children's read.
