Pak Dahl memang luarbiasa.

Another terrific animal tale from Dahl and illustrator Quentin Blake. I especially love the Roly-Poly Bird! It's fun to see how the cleverness of the scheming crocodile is ultimately his undoing, as he announces his plans to the other animals and they devise ways of saving the unsuspecting children and stopping him in his tracks.

This story was about a greedy crocodile who loved to eat children and trouble the animals of the jungle.Once he has clever plans to eat children the animals he troubled in the jungle wreck his plans. This was a very short and simple book but interesting nonetheless.I have always loved Roald Dahl and this book just increased my love for his books. But the sad thing is that The Enormous Crocodile was hungry at the end of the day.If only he had taken the advice of The Not so big Crocodile and just stuck to eating fish, he would have probably not been hungry :)

Jag tyckte att det var roligt när elefanten i den boken snurrade krokodilen runt runt runt och slängde till iväg den till en annan planet. /Elin 6 år

Read this with Carson last week, Mom gave it and many other's to us. My busy body son found himself sitting still and listening, only getting up to get a closer look at the pictures. He thought it was "really funny" and loved this little story, he is struggling in school and struggles to like reading so this was a win for us, he is 7 years old.

One of my most beloved books as a child. The one I made my parents read over and over again. Must have the Quentin Blake illustrations, too!

The Enormous Crocodile is a somewhat determined villain. But he isn’t very clever. His sole aim is to consume a juicy child, but he makes the mistake of sharing his mission with all of his jungle companions. To the children’s vantage, the other characters in the story have a heart; they make it their mission to stop him.

Roald Dahl's 'The Enormous Crocodile' is scary, funny, and moral; three very important ingredients for a good children's book. My initial reaction to reading this book as an adult was how gory it was, and how this would surely frighten a lot of children. The gruesome descriptions of "bones go[ing] crunch" and children being "juicy and yummy", however, are perfectly juxtaposed with colourful and comforting imagery. Dahl uses the perfect helping of scary stirred with heroic and amusing scenes to create a heart-warming tale.

A brilliant scene is when the Enormous Crocodile disguises himself as a palm tree in order to "gobble up a little child". Dahl creates a comic image in a child's head, whilst maintaining the element of fear. His descriptions embellish the child's imagination and keep them on the edge of their seats:
"The Enormous Crocodile peered through the branches, watching them as they came closer and closer. He licked his lips. He began to dribble with excitement."

Onomatopoeic words such as "squish", "crunch" and "gollop" make this book perfect for reading aloud to a class, whilst encouraging children to really annunciate. Actions could be incorporated whilst reading these words, which in turn cement the meaning of them into the child's head.

It is a fun yet educational tale for ages across the primary spectrum, although the early years may find it a little frightening. The underlying message of good triumphing over evil makes this an untimely tale, which can be read generation after generation.

The contextual world of the book is kindly and protective. The Crocodile is by far the most dangerous creature in it; even the other crocodiles think him excessive. Each of the creatures the crocodile discomforts, elephant, monkey and bird, intercede to protect the children and thwart this evil intent. Even if discomforted or made afraid, the reader has a reassuring sense that the rest of the world is on his or her side – a pleasing thought. At the end the Crocodile is thrown into outer space and consumed by the sun. He is totally removed as a present or future threat to the children. If only…

Best audiobook ever.

Jeremiah chose this on his own from the school library, and came home so excited to tell me all about it. He'd already read it in school. We were about to go on a short drive, maybe 20 minutes tops, and he asked if he could read it to me.

Best. audiobook. ever.

We laughed, and discussed, and nearly peed over Muggle-Wump's name. Once we got to our destination we weren't done, so he kept going until suddenly he decided it was my turn, and I got to take over, giving each animal a different voice and continuing our conversation.

So much laughter and joy in such a short book. What a greedy crocodile, and what a great bunch of animals.

Time to get the kiddo into more Dahl.
