An excellent book on improving your vocabulary. I've just bought another one recently, '1500 words in 15 minutes at day', and haven't started it to see how they compare. 'Word Power made easy' was broken up into categories based on what you might require. Each category revolved around a central theme which helped to hold everything together when learning.
Apart from introducing new words, defining them and using them with other inter-connected words, there were also useful information on the origins of words, the roots, prefixes and suffixes which went a long way to learning and using the words.
This was a great book and I will definitely purchase a new copy since I don't have it with me.

A definitive classic in its own right!!

I was gifted this book by a teacher while I was a student of the eighth standard. Other Vocab books have come and gone, but Lewis' book remains timeless. Gift it to all those you wish to possess immaculate grip over the language of Milton and Shakeapeare and Dickens.

One feels tempted to quote James Nicoll who said: "The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."

You’ll infrequently find traditionalists care a fig for foreign words. Nevertheless, English has been integrating them and making them its own, ever since the Vikings invaded northern England and introduced words like sky, dirt, take, egg, husband, they, and window. And although Old English, was already a pretty rich and expressive language, this book almost carries you across 1500 years of copping vocabulary from far and wide, which has made English even more supple, amusing, and animated.

Well, this is one of the those books that are not for read, but study. I spent most of my mornings of medical leave learning new vocabularies from this book, which has fulfilled my small goal. Yet this book needs to be reviewed constantly or at least intermittently to solidify what I have learned. It is very well written and made learning new vocabulary not only a little bit not that intimating, also a fun and rewarding experience. The roots, suffix and prefix of the words are explained very clearly thus expanding the vocabulary based on those has been made a little easier to understand, and the most importantly, to retain.

I wish I would have got this book earlier. Very unique approach to learn new words using etymology. There are some session in between each modules which are also very helpful (Like grammar, spelling checking, understanding of your etymology etc). I recommend this book to everyone to make their English very fruitful.

The best in the vocab building genre. The foundation course for all future vocab books. The approach to etymology and the emphasis on its significance is superb.

Not for the reader who wants to learn a quick word or 2. I should like to quote the first 2 lines of the book:

"Dont read this book...This book is not for reading!!!"

It is a book about how to improve your vocabulary and it does so in a very different manner. A short anecdote is attached with each words. As written in the books every word is associated with an idea. By learning new words, we are expanding our horizon of knowledge. The explanation of each words with their corresponding origins help the readers to engulf the words very conveniently. I think every one should give this book a read.
