This is one of the best programs for teaching a young child to read! Whether completely new to reading or a struggling reader in the early grades, this book will lead to success and have a child reading fluently in just 100 short lessons!
I've taught my oldest and am currently 3/4ths done with my second child on this book. Overall I'm happy with it, but about lesson 50 or so it becomes quite difficult quickly. It's one of those things that simply has to be pushed through, but it is incredibly painful for the child (and thus the parent) until the kid catches up.
It’s not flashy, but it was inexpensive and easy to implement. Once we got past the hurdle of simply not being ready, we made great progress. It is simple to the point that it’s “boring”, but it’s amazing to see how the book really gradually laid the foundation for learning to read!
The method is one way to learn. The practice stories are awful. Boring and not stories I would want to read to my kids. Look up the Muriel Dwyer method if you want something similar but without the incredibly outdated stories.
This book is fantastically effective! I have seen a total of eight children learn to read with this book, and wind up at a level far beyond those of their age group. True, it is not the most engaging, but it teaches reading and the rules to reading that are carried far into adulthood. We have loaned out our copy more times than I can count.
4.5 Rating. This book helped my daughter learn to read the summer before she started Kindergarten. There were a couple of minor errors in the text, however, the book did an excellent job of laying the foundation down for learning to read and reading. Doing a lesson from this book each day with my daughter, helped us get into the habit of dedicated reading every day. I highly recommend giving this book a try if you are trying to teach your child to read. The little stories in the book were entertaining for my daughter and me.
In my humble opinion, this book is a must have for all kids that are beginning to read. I tried to teach my kid off of Youtube and various other methods, including their school curriculum but nothing stuck. It was very hard to be consistent.
Then I stumbled upon this while searching for how to teach kids to read. The key here is consistency. Devot 30 mins everyday even on weekends and holidays. The book mentions this in the very beginning. Parents please read through that part. Its very important and informative.
Grind through the first couple of lessons even if the kids know how to pronounce the letters. You'll notice progress soon. And by the time they are at lesson number 80 onwards they are able to read lots of words easily.
I can’t give this enough stars. It’s 100% works. It started out a little rough the first couple of weeks as my son struggled to sit still through the lessons, but then once he caught on to the pattern, we took off. My son would ask me to do reading lessons every day and wanted to do more than 1 lesson at a time because he enjoyed them. He started kindergarten at a second grade reading level thanks to this book. Skip sight words, teach your kid to learn the best way!
