I used this book with my son at home when he was preschool age, and it worked amazingly! The lessons were well laid-out and easy to teach. My son loved the stories and feeling accomplished so quickly.
I have an Elementary Education degree, and was concerned at first that there may be some difficulty in transitioning from this into the more traditional method once he went to Kindergarten. But the transition was seamless, and he just entered Kindergarten with a very solid base knowledge to build on.
I've since passed it on to another friend, and have highly recommended it to several others!

This book was amazing. My son is four and can read. We started it in October and plan on finishing in the new year. My son is becoming a great little reader.

I will say he didn't always love it. Some days were hard but you really have to be patient and sometime resort to bribery... We have a sticker calendar and everyday when he completes his lesson he gets a sticker and a gummy bear ( his children's multivitamin). The hardest part is the first ten lessons, they are pretty brutal but once you start reading little stories it gets much better. Also the second reading can be hard some days. But overall its been an awesome book and he generally enjoys it and is very proud of himself. I highly recommend this book, I think there really is a certain magic with the parent being the one to teach a child to read.

It really really works!

One of my kids is not an enthusiastic reader. It's been a real struggle. This book was helpful to me with its structure and approach. We started in the middle since he already knew his phonics. The stories made us chuckle. A few of the comprehension questions were weird, but overall I appreciated this book!

We first attempted this book when my son was 4 and got about 15 lessons in before realizing he wasn’t quite ready. I also didn’t like it the first time we attempted it and was thinking of using an alternative program.

We tried again when he turned 5, he was ready this time! Although the first ten lessons are a bit of a slog, with both of you getting used to the format, after that things get easier and they’re reading real words pretty quickly which helped to keep my son motivated and excited for the lessons.

I chose not to completely follow the script, as I had heard from other mothers with older children who had used this book when their children were younger that not following it completely was okay if that’s what you felt best. I don’t think my son would have been as interested if I had followed everything completely.

We’ve stopped the book (for now) but made it to Lesson 81. My son is still working on his reading speed but can sound out words very well. We’ve switched to first reader books for his primary lessons and I also found another language arts program that has more beautiful pictures and stories to mix things up and round out his reading education. 100 Lessons has been invaluable for helping him get this far though, and I’ll definitely be using it with helping my younger children learn to read.

Extremely helpful method for teaching some children to read. It worked for mine anyway. Well I used it with my oldest and my younger daughter eavesdropped on the lessons and taught herself.

Used this for M - gave our copy away, just ordered through the library for W. Hoping for a successful round two!

First time around, we DNF halfway through because she could read, which, Iirc, the book says not to do. Oh well, method was effective and off she went into actual books.

I spent more than enough time on this book to count it as read! My four year old got through fifty-some lessons. Starting around lesson 50, the stories got a lot longer which was overwhelming for him, so we decided to table it til next summer before kindergarten. He is still very proud to be able to sound out words and he’s already got some sight words memorized! I loved being able to be his first reading teacher. The format just works! I immediately remembered it from working in a sped classroom.

We used this book to teach both our kids how to read. This is an amazing methodology that gives instructions to both adults and children in the process. Both our kids could read fluently by age three thanks to this book and have been above their reading level every since. Highly recommend!

It seems gimmicky, but I highly recommend this book! I have two very good readers after having worked through this book. This was recommended to me by several homeschooling moms that I know, all of which have good readers. It must be understood, though, that this is not a grammar book. This is simply teaching a child to read the words in front of him. It uses mainly phonics, but also incorporates memorization of “funny words”.

After I consulted with my sister, Rachel Deese, who is a wonderful educator and has a masters in Reading, we used this book in conjunction with A.C.E.‘s Word Building lessons (our main curriculum) and did fine. She was glad that phonics was the overall principle used, and that it also recognized that not all English words will hold to strict phonetic pronunciations. Her only recommendation was to be sure to keep terminology consistent between this book and our regular curriculum so as not to confuse the kids.

I must say as well that it wasn’t always easy. The lessons could get tedious and frustrating, because it’s a whole new way of thinking for a Kindergartner. But I would say, stick with it! After all, who says every lesson of every day of school has to be Sesame Street!? As I read the reviews on Amazon, there were some who hated the book because of this, and I suppose it is fair to say that at certain points it was difficult. Some days we just had to skip the lesson. But I’m so happy with the results.

It was definitely worth it to read the introductory material so I knew what my part was. Each lesson begins with introducing a new sound. Then there is a section of drilling, and finally the child gets to read a story. I read all the words in red, and the child follows my instruction. The book says that the lesson should only take 20 minutes, but for us it was twice as long. I suppose it was 20 minutes on a really good day when my kids were really into it and breezing through it, but this was not typical.

I’ll post this video below to show how my kids read. In the video Matthew is in 1st grade and reading his A.C.E. PACEs easily. He went through the book last year. Katie was in Kindergarten. I’d say my kids are very normal. They don’t have any developmental issues, so those factors may influence your decision to use it. You’ll notice that they are sounding out a lot of words, and that’s good! My challenge now is to get them to read outside of class time. Katie seems to be enjoying reading the most, but Matthew is proud of himself for his reading skill even though he’d rather be playing Lego’s.

Finished this curriculum with our preschooler for homeschooling this year; it worked as advertised and got her to a solid reading level. My only quibble, and this may be unique to us, is that the lessons were more like 30-40 minutes to really get comprehension, but accounting for that, the methods and practices are well explained and grounded in theory

This has mixed reviews online, it either works or doesn't for your child. For us it worked. I was warned there are some typos throughout the instructor prompts (nothing the child notices), so a little sloppy editing, but at the end of the day it taught my young five year old to read and we will now work through the book's suggested supplemental reading list (18 of the 20 are at my library).
