A great new take on the Three Little Pigs. It shows that not only was the wolf powerful but clever. The Three pigs could be taught to think better. Also that it helps when you work with someone.

Summary:
It is an interesting take from a well-known fairy tale with a mystery. Police Detective Doggedly is on a mission to find the big bad wolf because he keeps causing trouble. Every time Doggedly finds him messing with the pigs or chickens, he says he won't do it again, but he still keeps messing with the other animals. The three pigs are having trouble with their house because the wolf keeps blowing it down. Will Doggedly be able to find the big bad wolf and save the sweet little piggies' house?

Teaching Idea:
This book could be great for teaching younger students in second or third-grade writing. They could write their fairy tale with a twist. I would have them pick a classic fairy tale from a list, and then I would have them try to make it a mystery, just like this story, so that they learn how mystery books work and are working on their writing.

I do love a different version of a classic and this definitely fits the bill. It leaves enough clues that my four year old felt confident predicting what would happen next. Definitely add this to your Three Little Pigs unit of study!

This book was a very entertaining read for my students! The characters were good and the author did a great job with the plot!
There are many ways I think this book could be utilized in classrooms. I work with first graders and think it would be helpful to use this book to teach story elements. I also think this book could be used in conjunction with The True Story about the three little pigs by Scieszka and Smith to compare and contrast the characters and the different story elements. I also think it could be a great conversation about different societal norms in each story and how those norms are similar or different to our society.

My girls could not see that the wolf was dressed in sheep's clothing until after I spent a lot of time trying to convince them that the wolf was indeed in sheep's clothing.

Personal Reaction: I really loved this story! It is a different take on the Three Little Pigs, and has a mystery element to it also. I like how on each page there are little clues in the illustrations to figure out who the culprit is!

Purpose: Read aloud for students grades 1-3
-enjoyment, it is a story they probably have heard before but with a different spin on it. Folk Literature Variant
-the mystery element is also very engaging and entreating for students to try and figure out who the bad guy is in the story and who blew the little pigs house down. There are also clues in the illustrations which can lead to a potential discussion on each page and for each picture
-unique third person perspective that is different from the original story of the Three Little Pigs
-the narrative style of the story told through Detective Doggedly's point of view
-the characterization of the the narrator, the Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, and the sheep. The wolf and Doggedly are more complex characters, where as the little pigs and the sheep are more flat throughout the story

Curriculum: Read aloud for students grades 1-3
-introducing a variant of Folk Literature/Traditional Literature. Discussing how this story is different from the original and compare the two.
-the mystery element of the story can lead to a great discussion on problem solving. In this case talking about the clues and how Doggedly came to the conclusion it was the sheep
-introducing/discussing a lesson on narratives and story development, characterization: round, strong, flat, etc.
-learning about genre as a type of meaning or kind of book with the students
-lessons on Traditional Literature combined with other types such as fairytales, myths, fables, realistic fiction, etc. Having students learn the elements in each type of literature and identify them in the picture books and classify them.
