Όμορφοι και ευχάριστοι άνθρωποι, με ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά, απάγονται σε όλες τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες κι έτσι ο νεοπροσληφθείς στο FBI πράκτορας Άλεξ Κρος αναλαμβάνει την υπόθεση, μόνο και μόνο για να ανακαλύψει πως αυτό δεν είναι σχέδιο κάποιου κατά συρροήν δολοφόνου αλλά μια από τις χιλιάδες παράνομες και τεράστιου ρίσκου και φυσικά απόδοσης δουλειές του ισχυρότερου Ρώσου μαφιόζου, του Λύκου. Θα καταφέρει ο Κρος να βρει άκρη σε ένα κουβάρι χωρίς πανομοιότυπα χτυπήματα και χωρίς μάρτυρες; Από την άλλη, ποιες είναι οι πρώτες του εντυπώσεις από τη λειτουργία του FBI και πόσο πρόθυμος είναι να σταματά μπροστά στο εμπόδιο που λέγεται «γραφειοκρατία και πρωτόκολλο»; Πόσο εύκολο είναι να καταρρίψει τον μύθο του ντετέκτιβ που του κάνουν χάρες, μιας και όλοι πιστεύουν πως προσελήφθη και τον αντιμετωπίζουν οι ανώτεροί του ευνοϊκά χάρη στη φήμη που τον ακολουθεί με τις συλλήψεις του Καζανόβα, του Κάιλ Κρεγκ και άλλων;

Η ένατη περιπέτεια του έγχρωμου ντετέκτιβ και πλέον πράκτορα Άλεξ Κρος είναι κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό από συγγραφικής και θεματικής άποψης, αν και όχι απόλυτα επιτυχημένο. Ο Λύκος είναι καλά δικτυωμένος, ξέρει να φυλάγεται, να κρύβεται και να παίρνει υψηλό ρίσκο, διψασμένος για αίμα, αδίστακτος και άφοβος. Έτσι και η υπόθεση αυτή, ξεκινάει με το γνωστό μοτίβο απαγωγή-αναζήτηση ενόχων-μάρτυρες κάπου κάπου και ξαφνικά, όταν βγαίνει ο ίδιος ο Λύκος στο προσκήνιο, τα πάντα αλλάζουν. Παρ’ όλο που έχουμε διαρκείς ανατροπές και έντονη αγωνία, είναι λες και ο συγγραφέας απλώς χαράζει την επιφάνεια των χαρακτήρων, δίνοντας έμφαση στην αλυσίδα των γεγονότων που θα διαλύσουν μια οργάνωση απάνθρωπων πλασμάτων, τα οποία αγοράζουν με πάρα πολλά χρήματα το σάρκινο αντικείμενο του πόθου τους για να το κάνουν κυριολεκτικά ό,τι θέλουν. Κωδικοί και ηλεκτρονικά πρωτόκολλα δίνουν επιτέλους πρόσβαση στο κρυφό site (τη Φωλιά του Λύκου) όπου συζητούν μεταξύ τους και σταδιακά αρχίζει να βγαίνει μια άκρη (πάντως αναρωτιέμαι αν βρέθηκαν και οι υπόλοιποι της συμμορίας, μιας και δεν αποκαλύπτεται η ταυτότητα όλων, κι αν όχι, αυτό έγινε γιατί ίσως εμφανιστούν στο επόμενο βιβλίο, τις «Γέφυρες του Λονδίνου» ή απλώς τους ξέχασε ο James Patterson;).

Η καθαυτή ταυτότητα του Λύκου είναι ένα παιχνίδι γάτας και ποντικού με τον αναγνώστη, μιας και κανένας απ’ όσους είναι ύποπτοι δεν είναι ο πραγματικός Λύκος, με αποτέλεσμα να έχουμε συναρπαστικές σκηνές ανθρωποκυνηγητού ή νομικών τερτιπιών, την επανεμφάνιση του Κάιλ Κρεγκ στον οποίο απευθύνεται ο Κρος για βοήθεια (δεν είναι φυλακή αυτό με τόσες πληροφορίες, facebook είναι) και φυσικά την απηνή προσωπική δίωξη του Κρος και της οικογένειάς του από τον Μεγάλο Κακό Λύκο, όπως είναι και ο τίτλος του πρωτοτύπου. Ακόμη και η δολοφονία ενός ανθρώπου-κλειδί στην τελευταία κυριολεκτικά σελίδα του μυθιστορήματος αφήνει την υπόθεση σε κρίσιμο σημείο, για να συνεχιστεί και να ολοκληρωθεί στο επόμενο, κάτι που ήδη είχε κάνει ο συγγραφέας με τα βιβλία «Το μεγάλο κόλπο» και «Οι δολοφόνοι της νύχτας». Πολύ φοβάμαι όμως πως και στην περίπτωση του Λύκου η αποκάλυψη της πραγματικής ταυτότητας του ενόχου θα είναι κάτι εξίσου τραβηγμένο ή στραβά φωτισμένο με του Κάιλ Κρεγκ, μιας κι εκεί είχαμε έναν απόλυτα νομοταγή πράκτορα, χωρίς τίποτα το σκοτεινό ή το ύποπτο και ξαφνικά γίνεται το έλα να δεις. Για να μη θυμηθώ τη σκηνή όπου ο Κρος και η ομάδα του συλλαμβάνουν τον «Λύκο» κατά τη διάρκεια ενός χλιδάτου πάρτι αλλά μόλις κάποιος φωνάζει «φωτιά» τον παρατάνε για να τρέξουν στη φωτιά και δεν απομακρύνονται με τα απαραίτητα μέτρα ασφαλείας και τον ύποπτο μαζί!

Σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, ο Άλεξ Κρος, παρ’ όλο που ζει στην Ουάσιγκτον και παρακολουθεί μαθήματα στην Ακαδημία του FBI, λόγω της υπόθεσης ταξιδεύει και πάλι σε όλη σχεδόν την Αμερική από το Ντάλας ως το Φορτ Λότερντέιλ και την Ατλάντα. Με έκπληξη διαπιστώνει πόσο διαφορετικά κινείται το FBI σε κρίσιμες υποθέσεις, μιας και παρ’ όλο που υπάρχουν πάμπολλοι ικανοί και έξυπνοι πράκτορες, το πρωτόκολλο και η αργή γραφειοκρατία είναι μεγάλα εμπόδια. Ταυτόχρονα διαπιστώνει πως υπάρχει μια εχθρότητα από τον υπεύθυνο εκπαίδευσης (που συν τω χρόνω αποκαλύπτεται πως έβαλε το λιθαράκι του στη διαρροή ειδήσεων αλλά αντικαθίσταται οπότε συνεχίζουμε παρακάτω, τι έλεγα πιο πάνω για επιφανειακή πλοκή;), ότι κάποιες ριψοκίνδυνες κινήσεις του επιφέρουν δυσαρέσκεια αλλά ο διευθυντής Ρον Μπερνς δεν έχει πει την τελευταία του λέξη κι επίσης υπάρχει φυσικά και χαφιεδισμός. Μήπως λοιπόν αρχίζει να αλλάζει γνώμη γι’ αυτήν την αλλαγή στη ζωή του; «Ο ερχομός μου στο FBI ήταν ένα σφάλμα. Αυτοί εδώ ενεργούσαν με πολύ διαφορετικό τρόπο απ’ ό,τι είχα συνηθίσει εγώ. Από τη μια επέμεναν να κάνουν τα πάντα σύμφωνα με τους κανονισμούς κι από την άλλη τους ξεχνούσαν τους κανονισμούς. Διέθεταν φοβερά μέσα και συγκλονιστικό όγκο πληροφοριών αλλά, όταν έβγαιναν στους δρόμους, συχνά αποδεικνύονταν ερασιτέχνες. Το Γραφείο είχε στις τάξεις του μερικούς ικανότατους ανθρώπους αλλά και πολλούς απίστευτα ανίδεους» (σελ. 289).

Επιπλέον, αρχικά έδειχνε πως όντως θα περνούσε περισσότερο χρόνο με την οικογένειά του όμως όσο η υπόθεση του Λύκου έπαιρνε ανεξέλεγκτη τρόπο τόσο ο Κρος βυθιζόταν μέσα της. Να λοιπόν που μια τέτοια κατάσταση καταφέρνει να κερδίσει υπέρ της η Κριστίν Τζόνσον όταν επιστρέφει για να διεκδικήσει την κηδεμονία του Άλεξ Τζούνιορ που άφησε στα χέρια του πρώην άντρα της και εγκαταστάθηκε στο Σιάτλ. Κι όλα αυτά ενώ ο Άλεξ και η ερωμένη του, Τζαμίλα Χιουζ, ντετέκτιβ στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο, αγωνίζονται να κρατήσουν τη σχέση τους ζωντανή.

Το μυθιστόρημα «Στη Φωλιά του Λύκου» είναι ένα διαρκές ανθρωποκυνηγητό με πολλά μυστικά και ανατροπές κι έναν ασύλληπτο και αφάνταστα δύσκολο κι επικίνδυνο αντίπαλο ενώ ταυτόχρονα έχουμε ένα βιβλίο που αποτελεί μάλλον μεταβατικό κρίκο από τη μια ιδιότητα του Άλεξ Κρος στην άλλη, εξ ου και το διαφορετικό μοτίβο της πλοκής.

Big Bad Wolf had a sufficient amount of tension and moved along at a nice pace, but what it suffered is that neither the plot, the situation or the characters were remotely believable. The Wolf is an ultra shadowy Russian mafioso who is invisible, omniscient and omnipotent. He can do anything he wants, any time he wants, and has no limitation on reach or resources. He's not a credible character. If you look at the history of law enforcement, the law officers know who the bad guys are, but they often can't build up enough evidence to arrest and convict them. The Wolf is built as this hands on character, who gets in the middle of all of this shady business, but nobody knows who he is or what he looks like. The plot disintegrates into ridiculousness by the end, when The Wolf has all of these impersonators and just when it seems like they are going to nail him, guess what, it's not The Wolf. I wasn't buying any of it, and although the story was reasonably entertaining, it wasn't very good.

Kidnapping is not unusual to top law enforcement and certainly not to the FBI.
However James Patterson has thrown a curve ball at the general kidnapping scenario. There are no threats or ransom demands of any kind. The several victims so far are gorgeous drop-dead model types that have no ties to the underworld; at least they had none before they were snatched off the street in broad daylight.
A man and woman are watching Mrs. Elizabeth, Lizzie, Connolly, gorgeous mother of three daughters, as she exits a fashionable Atlanta department store. Lizzie Connolly wrestles with her packages as she walks directly toward the parking structure.
The woman quickly walked past Mrs. Connolly, turned and put the victim in a vice like grip as the man placed a chemically laced cloth over her face. Lizzie Connolly screamed and kicked until she was rendered helpless by the chemical substance and dropped to the concrete floor. The kidnapper’s placed the unconscious woman into her own station wagon and blithely drove out of the parking structure, changed to another car just blocks away and the abduction was complete.
Alex Cross, old time law enforcement but new and in training for his current job with the FBI. Cross is called out of class to the chagrin of his training officer, and assigned to the kidnapping case for reasons of his unique expertise.
There were no ransom demands or death threats for the several kidnapped women; law enforcement was stuck without a motive in the case. Rumor and innuendo provide only vague clues that seem to point toward the Russian mafia.
An unidentified sinister figure called Wolf, one time KGB and high up in the Russian mafia here in the states emerges as a potential but elusive target. At the same time Wolf was put on the FBI’s most wanted list, the kidnapping for ransom case moved into a white slave investigation.
James Patterson has fashioned a who-done-it mystery with enough twist’s and turns to keep the most avid mystery buff guessing until the very end.

ANOTHER BANGER!! What a trilling rideee. THE WOLF IS RUTHLESS . I love AGENT ALEX CROSS!!

I read this after I read London Bridges, which didn't really effect anything too much. I think I would have been more irritated if I read London Bridges after this because the characters acted clueless about the wolf the entire way through Bridges, yet they should have known who he was at that time. Anyway, the lack of any real detective work in these novels irritates me. Alex lets other people uncover things then goes after the bad guy and fails. Someone will turn up a piece of information, Alex will ask some questions to himself, then the possible bad guy will be sighted and Alex goes there. It's ridiculous. I don't like Alex, I don't care about his life, I don't care about whatever random girl takes an interest in him in each book. The mysteries are ok, the bad guys are ok, but there is nothing special here. I haven't read many mystery series, but every other one I've tried is better than this. Since these are easy to get I will continue to read them until I find something else, but each book makes me want to work that much harder to find a replacement as soon as possible. I really don't see what everyone loves about this series, but to each their own.

Every time the agents have a lead, they are stymied. They find and arrest several participants in this ring, but everywhere they turn, The Wolf eludes them. Each time they think they have finally identified him, they come up short.

Meanwhile, Alex's family life is taking a hit, too. His youngest son, Alex, given up by the mother, Christine Johnson, in his infancy, is now the subject of a new custody battle. It seems that Christine is pulling out all the stops and stating that Alex Cross is a lightning rod for danger, which puts his son at risk.

This is a very exciting tale, between the FBI pursuits, bureaucratic hijinks, and various near misses...while on the periphery, the shadow of the custody battle looms.

Until the very last page, I wasn't sure how this would end up, but I knew I had to keep reading. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this particular Alex Cross adventure,"The Big Bad Wolf (Alex Cross)," it wasn't one of the best. Therefore, the four star rating.

Another book in the series as I March through all of the Alex Cross books! I’m going to have withdrawals after I finish! I’m loving them as much as I did when I read them 20 years ago. The “wolf” in this book is particularly troubling, and he’s as sly as a fox! There are multiple villains who pay to get either a man or a woman kidnapped. All very beautiful/handsome of course! The main baddy is the “wolf” though, and he is one terrifying dude! The end is a major cliffhanger, but that’s okay. I just picked up the next in the series. I’ll be back to review the next one!

it was kind of jarring the multiple perspectives without stating at the beginning which perspective it was. you just had to figure it out based on context clues. you could do it, but it didn’t make for seemless reading. poor little alex being taken. that was soooo sad.

So this book was way extreme for me. This time Alex was dealing with the Mob and the sex slave trade… :-( , for sure not my cup of tea. BUT I will say that I was still very interested in the book. Mr Patterson sure knows how to write a freakin story.
Alex is called in to work a case were a federal judge's wife is kidnapped, then a clothing designer followed by Benjamin. The books goes from person to person as they are with their captors. It was too much for me at times especially with Audrey and her captor… I don’t know what I would do in that situation but she definitely was stronger than I would have been. This whole sex trade business was foiled by a little kid, some 14 year old that was able to hack into their private chat and figure out where they were when even the FBI wasn’t able to…. Hold that!

I think the worse part of the whole book for me was when I found out that the dirty ass judge is the one that sold his own wife. How horrible a marriage do you have to have to do that!
I did appreciate that Alex felt a bit intimidated by the complexity of working with the FBI as compared to the police force. It made it all a bit more realistic, then the realism faded away when Sorokin dies via Rocket Launcher… yea...

Alex Cross had joined the FBI and was in his initial training period at Quantico (which he barely needed after the years as detective on the police force) when he was called into a high profile case. Attractive, young, blonde white women were being abducted – some in broad daylight. When it came to light that there was a pattern involved, they knew they had a problem.

Sexual slavery run by one of the top mobsters in the world – a Russian nicknamed the Wolf – was behind the whole terrible business. Cross was working with the FBI but his rapid rise caused anger between some of the Feds; he found he wasn’t getting told a lot of details and frustration was high.
On the home front, Alex also had problems with his youngest son – tensions were rising; his anger and annoyance was high. Torn between his family and his work, he wondered if they would beat the Wolf? And what would happen with little Alex?

The Big Bad Wolf by James Patterson is another fast paced thriller centred on an evil, narcissistic killer who needs to be taken down. The novel has the usual short chapters which I enjoy; the good, the bad and the corrupt all fill the pages. Another great Alex Cross novel which I recommend.

Always enjoy reading his books. Keep you guessing.

There isn’t much for me to say about this book yet, I think I’ll continue to simmer on it for awhile, but what stood out to me with this installment was the storyline of it all. I loved the main plot about Alex chasing down whoever was abducting young men and women and ensuring they got back safely, but I also enjoyed the secondary drama of Christine coming back into the picture and fighting for custody of Little Alex.

On the other hand, I’m not a huge fan of The Wolf. He does the most for absolutely no reason. Though he is ruthless, at the same time he comes off as cowardly in certain instances. Unfortunately, I have to endure one more book with him, but it’s doable.
