This was my first John Saul and had it not been for this one I probably wouldn't have tried for years to get my hands on every John Saul book that was ever written. It was the first of many to be read. Loved it; cover to cover Exceptional Writer. Highly recommend this.

Middle school Carrie! LOL, I had to say that.
This book has all the feeling of the 70's - 80's horror movies and I love it for that.
I think that rather than a vengeful ghost story, this is about how adults prefer to go blind to their children problems instead of dealing with them or accept that there's something wrong and thus admitting their own failure on any form of parenting or authority.

One star, two stars... I gave this two because I like the idea, but John's early writing style is terrible. He also tended to toss in enough ridiculous pop psychology to make me roll my eyes at the absurdity. He is good at creating an image and playing it through, but it feels like he is cramming ideas down the reader's throat instead of attempting to tell the story from the character's perspective.

This was a delightfully creepy book that is just classic John Saul. The narration was fantastic. He did a perfect job of writing how well children taunt and turn on each other. I just absolutely loved it!

Read it when I was 12. Scared me to death. About to reread it again 13 years later! :-D

This books stressed me out in the best possible way. Vivid but heartbreaking characters and great suspense. I all at once needed to know how it ended and dreaded reading the next page.

Here's the thing with John Saul - at least some of his earlier stuff from the late 70s, early 80s: his characters make decisions and act based on the needs of the plot, rather than on their own internal logic.

There's a lot to like about this story. It's rare these days that I get really creeped out by a book, but there are some images early on in here that really feel like they're going somewhere; really gave me a chill. Unfortunately, the characters were so poorly realised that as the story progressed, their motivations seemed to become less clear, and their actions and decision less justified. So that wall of suspended disbelief couldn't hold, and the story ended a lot less satisfactorily than it had begun.

This is a decent little horror story for a lazy rainy (foggy) afternoon. But sadly doesn't quite make it into the classics.

This book is exactly as insane as the cover makes it seem. Imagine an 80s made-for-TV movie (looking at you IT and FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC) and you will know exactly what you're in for. My only complaint is there isn't much of a build up to any main event, it's sort of the same level of creepy/weirdness/horror the whole time. All of this is not to discount what was a completely addictive read. If you are in the mood for campy horror, then COMES THE BLIND FURY won't let you down. Ghost in a bonnet? Creepy old doll? Annoying kids meeting their demise? Judgy small townsfolk? Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Besides the supernatural side of the story, this is a sobering warning concerning what bullying does to kids. Some stay victims till the end. Others become bullies. I feel a deep sense of sadness, both for Amanda and for Michelle. As for what the future holds...we can only imagine how the vicious cycle will continue.

My sister and I were on a big John Saul kick when we were in junior high and high school. We eventually got tired of the formulaic storytelling but for a while there we were hooked. This one was about a blind girl who winds up dying while being teased by a group of kids and she comes back to enact her revenge. I think I'll stay away from any re-reads and just be happy with my memories of this one!

I read this book when I was 14 or 15, perfect horror for that age. My first ‘spooky doll that keeps coming back’ book. (Listen to Jonathan Coulton’s song Spooky Doll) If these were published now, I think they would be considered ‘Teen Horror’. It’s scary and a quick read. I might give it to my teen girls but if you like horror with twists, this is very predictable.
