Even more simplistic than 'Said the Shotgun to the Head' Saul Williams fills this book with some of the most beautiful small words and short lines. It has a short sweet and airy tone that is very different from his voice on his album Amethyst Rocks. His poetry here is lie small pieces of thoughts taken out of this boys broken heart/fearful dreams. The poems do not string together to create some overwhelming Tidal Wave like Amethyst Rocks or even Shotgun, but it takes small fragments of how we feel when we feel tender and fits them together in this small blue book.
It is really wonderful. A perfect gift for a close close friend who appreciates spoken word poetry.
Also check out his newer book "Said the Shotgun to the Head" and hsi albums "Amethyst Rocks" and "Saul Williams". All good.
I’m probably not the intended audience for this; I’m not really a poetry fan. Mainly due to not understanding what is being said most of the time. I tend to need it to be a lot more direct, or at least have colourful enough imagery to get into the atmosphere. I love Saul’s music, so I was hoping to also get along with his poetry, but alas.
Some of the poems I liked, but for the most part they were just meh. I didn’t even grasp what the topic was until about halfway through. I can see why people would like this, but it’s too cryptic for my liking.
I will try again with his other books and see if it fares any better, hopefully it will.
i mean to like poetry, but i am easily disappointed. i have come to the conclusion that i am too cynical and judgmental. i expect certain people to be intelligent enough to make me feel like an idiot: my boss, my professor, my president, and definitely, my author. "mine", yes. my biggest, and i'll admit most immature, critique of someone is that they're "stupid". it's very hard to write poetry for someone like me. you go out on a limb and i reply with a, "well, that was dumb." so when say i like saul williams's poetry, it means i really, really liked it. "and how many thoughts perish before they hit the page?", he asks. what sadder thought is there when you truly like an author, to think of all the thoughts they did not write down?
it had rhythm and there were several stunning lines but i wasn't head over heels. and there were not many whole poems i found perfect or all that "done."
i got the feeling that he just pumps these out and doesn't go through an editing process...which is fine, if you are not going to publish your poetry...
*my pick for best of the book*
i drew a blank and i think it may be the best thing i've ever drawn
I first encountered Saul Williams as a rapper, but have since been going backwards and looking at his poetry work. This book is really intriguing; I love the way he counterpoises complicated networks of spiritual/religious symbols with concise, clear statements of insight. A couple pieces here are used on Amethyst Rock Star, his first musical album, so those were very familiar, but everything else was new and exciting and fascinating. Very good read.
a few months ago saul williams came and i stood in line for about an hour, he signed my book and all I could say was "I love every thing you do" when what I really meant to say was that we are soul mates, so stop looking and lets run off to Vegas together, even though I don't believe in marriage and I'm queer. I love this man.
